Tiger Direct cost me less to shop vs Newegg

Hey guys im not sure if this is a right area to post but it seems like everyone shops at Newegg including myself. I bought my monitor, graphics card and case fans from newegg and i just realize that Tiger Direct doesn't charge tax in California. I just recently bought a Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus from Tiger Direct and it cost me $32.67 with shipping and if i went to newegg it would of cost me $36.45. I know that doesn't sound much but that extra $4-$5 could go towards some thermal paste. Maybe this year i'll purchase my new build from Tiger Direct and my cpu from Microcenter lol. Keep in mind though that sometimes newegg doesn't charge shipping depending on what item it is. Please if you guys know any other places to shop other then Newegg, Tigerdirect or Microcenter let me know cause i want the best deals possible. Also there's a company called Mwave that's pretty good also I got my Lian-li PC 7FWB case there for $119.99 and most places have them for $149.99. Anyways this is probably pointless from me telling you guys this cause you guys probably already know where to get your best deals. Maybe im just happy that i get a better deal buying motherboards, heatsinks, rams etc from Tigerdirect because they don't charge tax at California for some reason lol...
 
Tax is charged from NewEgg/TigerDirect as well, but only if you live in the same state(s) that they are based out of.

Apparently, NewEgg has a distribution center or something there that makes them charge the tax. I live in Oklahoma, neither company charges me tax as neither one has a building of some sort in my state.

I know NewEgg has a center in Memphis as my order came from there. As you see below, it looks like NEwEgg has distribution centers in those 3 states.

Really you don't get charged tax from newegg? That's freakin awesome! :) I guess it really all depends on where you live. But in California im so use to paying taxes that's why i was suprised with Tiger Direct not charging me taxes.
 
As I mentioned, it's all dependent on (as NewEgg corrects me) where the item is being shipped to that determines whether or not you get charged taxes.

Most of the companies you deal with probably have a shop/distribution center/call center/etc in your state which has them charge taxes. They are required by law to charge it because of that. It's why NewEgg & TigerDirect doesn't charge me taxes, they don't have anything like that in my state.
 
I'm not a tax expert and don't know the exact law or how it's truly determined. The way I explained it is what I learned over the years. What is the true deciding factor? I don't really know. I just know it seems to deal with a physical building of some sort in the state item is being shipped to.

 
If they dont have a building in the state then its interstate commerce which falls under federal domain, not state domain so you cant get charged state sales tax. If you happen to be in one of the states where newegg is charged tax then its not surprising that tiger direct is cheaper for you, but for most of us the lack of tax on newegg makes it quite a bit cheaper
 
Well you might save a few bucks on tax, but if you buy from newegg, you will almost always get your parts sooner, because they have a warehouse in California, so most times you will get your goods the next business day. Tigerdirect sucks, alot of their items aren't stocked, and say ships in 5-15 days. I would pass on that.

Also technically when you buy goods from another state that aren't taxed, your supposed to claim it on your taxes the years end and pay use tax on them. Most people don't however.

Also your state is broke, help them out and pay a few taxes. Life could get worse for you if your state goes bankrupt.

OTOH the enermax magma fans were 20$ at microcenter
and 12 at mwave (about that at newegg on sale too)

I've noticed microcenter is more like a grocery store.. crazy deals to get you in the door.. like a grocery store.. ie cases of pepsi for 4$

vs newegg is more like the everyday low price walmart type model (with occassional crazy sales)

Yeah i like mwave also..Im planning on buying my 120mm Gelid wing fans from them since it's like 5 bucks cheaper compared to newegg. I got my Lian-li mid tower case from them also. Plus i like the fact that they give you credit or some kind for purchasing with them. I get 5bucks off my next item because i purchased a case. But honestly i think im going to buy most of my pc parts from Fry's Electronics because they do price matching and they have the best return policy that i know of. No re-stocking fee either and they are like 5mins away from me :)
 
I have used MWave,Newegg,Circuit City Online, Geeks.com and a few more. If you are not an expert computer builder Newegg has the best customer feedback setup including a verified owner tag so you can see who really bought the goods, and can give 1st hand pros and cons. They also have an easy RMA process. If you are timid about dipping your hands into the thermal compound Porta Tech.com and to a smaller extent MWave will assemble and test CPU/motherboards.
 
Newegg charges taxes in CA because it's headquarters is in that state.

If you live in any state where a company has an office or warehouse, then you are required to pay state taxes. For example, I know for a fact that Newegg has a warehouse in NJ; therefore all NJ residents are required to pay state taxes on anything they buy from Newegg. Since I live in NYC and there is no warehouse in NYS, I don't pay taxes on Newegg purchases.
 
Newegg sometimes costs a few bucks more, but they replace anything that ships broken or DOA, and they stand behind their products. I purchased RAM from Newegg in January 07, it went bad in February 08 1 month after warranty was up. I emailed Newegg, the same week they shipped me new sticks and gave me the box to ship the broken ones back in. Try doing that anywhere else.


Customer Service is why Newegg is worth the extra.

Bought my last monitor at Amazon to save on the tax and I received it a couple days after placing the order. NewEgg does have great customer service though.

I doubt the no tax loophole will last forever. They're working on changing that so enjoy it while you can.

I been screwed over by TD too many times in the past to ever use or recommend them ever again. I've been told by others that things have changed at TD over the years but I still hold on to my grudge...

Where would you recommend a Canadian living in Toronto to shop for computer goods?
Newegg? Tigerdirect? CanadaComputers?

I find shipping costs on newegg much too expensive. There are a few products that have free shipping, but not many.
 
FYI, Tiger Direct charges tax in IL, NC, GA, FL, TX

From the sounds of it, the government is loooking to have it charge across the board.

If the online store has a physical presence, outlet, warehouse, whatever, in your state you will be charged sales tax at the end of the transaction. Even if it does not you are still legally required to pay sales tax although not charged at the end of the transaction. I live in FL and if I buy from Tiger I get charged sales tax as it is from FL. N.egg will charge sales tax where it has a presence, ie Cali. Maybe TigerB2B can explain it in more detail.

MW14220 you said it very well.

Tiger has physical stores in those locations.
And more with our CompUSA side being in ID, and SD, tax applies in those states however doesn't pertain to our Tiger side.

I do get a lot of business from CA as one of the big reason we do not charge tax there and most have a presence there.

The playing fields will be closing soon as the internet is driving more business and people are avoiding their home states to save the extra 5-8%
I personally hope not, but I hear it in the chatter.
