Hey all, how we doing?

So, its probably been almost a decade since I built my first pc. With the only upgrade being a Radeon R9 380, about 3 years ago. So this is what im running

Intel i7 950 3.07 ghz
8 gigs ram Gskill
Radeon R9 380
\MOBO is a asus rampage 3

Computer is getting choppy after being on for so long; could be overheating. Some games I feel like I should be able to run on high but I cant. im really starting to wonder if its time to upgrade. or if i have other options. More thermal paste? or idk overclocking? Which im not that informed about. Id appreciate the help guys, thanks.

Solution
While replacing thermal paste is definitely something that should be done as often as once a year and can improve thermal issues if present, your system is pretty aged and you could benefit greatly from a new system. Your power supply is probably the biggest concern after being a decade old in a regularly used gaming system.

If you plan on keeping your R9 380 for some time, then perhaps just cleaning your system and ensuring optimal temps would be enough. If you want to upgrade your GPU then I would also consider upgrading the rest of your system.
