Hi all

2 days ago I replaced my CPU from a FX6100 to a FX8350, last night and this afternoon I've encountered issues where the computer randomly turned off.

Last night I was just playing Train Sim, and all of a sudden the computer just turned off, no warning no nothing, just switched off, pressing the on button didnt do anything at all, although there was still a light on the motherboard so I had to remove the kettle lead, wait for the motherboard light to go out and then put it back in and turn the computer back on. I thought it was just a random thing and hoped it would go away. But a short time later it did it again while playing train sim.

I downloaded AMD OverDrive just to see the temperature of the CPU and it was saying anything between 50c-60c which quick look on google, people said was pretty hot, so I reapplied the thermal paste and added a little bit extra just to be on the safe side. Started PC backup and the temperature seemed to stable it self at around 45-50c, although when playing Train sim for example it would actually go down to 30c-40c.

The same thing has happened again this afternoon, again playing train sim, and a look at the temperature now, its about 57-59c. So maybe I'm thinking, it's still hot? Or maybe the fact that my power supply is not giving enough power to my system?

I've got a 500W PSU and had so for a few years with no problems, but upgrading my CPU makes me think that maybe its a PSU issue not giving out enough power? Is there a way to test this at all?

I've got 3 fans attached to the case directly around the CPU, I've got a MasterCooler Heatsync ontop of the CPU doing its thing so I think theres plenty of fans. I've only had this issue since I upgraded my CPU

Edit: This has just happened again, again while playing train sim and CPU was about 30-40c
I was playing Truck Sim for about 30mins and nothing happened, not sure if its game specific or I wasnt playing long enough for it to happen.

I've uploaded the below pictures, just as screens of AMD OverDrive

What board are you using? Some board are only good for upto 95 watt cpus and you now have a 125watt part I think.

More system specs are needed for sure.

Power supply brand and model number
Motherboard model number
video card.
Less important things like
case
hard drive
ect

Please use cpu-z to get more detailed specs.

Something like this

You power supply will have a label on it.

Example image. You will want better than this one for your system :)

Hi

Appologies:

Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO (Not sure if anything to go by but just seen this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/this-able-handle-8350-overclocking/forum/Fx2O3GE4345M805/Tx3CWWPAE7DPQUK/1/ref=cm_cd_dp_aar_al_a?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B008RPZUZK

CPU:
AMD FX8350

Graphics:
AMD Radeon R7 200 Series

RAM:
2 x F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (GSKILL DDR3 1.50v) , (Each stick is 4GB)
Hard Drives:
Sandisk SDSSDP128G
Crucial_CT256MX100SSD1
ST31000520AS

PSU:
OCZ-CXS500W (500W)

Case:
Zalman Z11+

Fans:
2 built into case side panels (1 Each side)
1 rear
2 top (Next to HeatSinc)
1 Front Panel
I want to eventually upgrade my graphics to a R9 290 but know will need to up the PSU for that. Want to sort this issue out before looking at upgrades

EDIT:
Bare with me few mins for screens/pics

Thanks,

The board you list supports upto 140 watts from the cpu socket, so that is not an issue unless it has a defect.
The cpu is listed on the support page(Please ensure you have bios version 1604 or newer).
The power supply should be ok, but again defects do happen. Please ensure its fan is clean, if it gets too hot it may shut down to prevent system damage.

The R7 200 series contains various cards. None of the R7 series seem to need any more than one 6 pin cable for extra power keeping all the cards under 150 watts if pulling max power.

A program like GPU-z can tell you the exact card model.

You are kind of at a point that all the parts should work just fine. It would appear something has started to fail or develop a defect. Shut down is a safety built into many parts like the board and power supply.

Can you check the bios to see at what temperature the system shuts down. Also ensure the fan is running at max speed for testing.

I would place a bet on the power supply, but I can not be 100% sure.

Hi

Thanks for getting back so quick, I have to a feeling it is the PSU as it is several years old, but what about the heat tho? Surely thats not right. I'll get back to you shortly with BIOS info. For now though I've got some CPUZ screens + report:

Hi

Just looked at BIOS, Couldent find anything to do with temperature shutdown, looked everywhere. But this is what i found:

CPU Temp - Opened bios and it was 37c, it rose to 44c (AMD Overdrive now saying 44-51c)
MotherBoard Temp - 31C
CPU Q-Fan Control - Enable
CPU Fan Profile - Was standard now Turbo
CPU Fanspeed Low Limit - 600RPM
CFhasis Q-Fan Control - Disabled
Cool n'n Quiet - Enabled

I had similar problem with a pc very long time ago, it was motherboard, but in your case it could also be PSU, changing power supply is easier than motherboard so you should get a power supply for test from a friend or local pc shop and try it, if it's not power supply then it's most likely the motherboard(old capacitors).

I believe my BIOS is V1102 where as latest is 1708 http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/M5A99X_EVO/HelpDesk_Download/

Suppose it'd be a good idea to update that

XStampede - MB was purchased on 04/10/2012 , if it is the PSU Im thinking of getting http://www.ebuyer.com/584217-corsair-csm-750w-semi-modular-80-gold-power-supply-cp-9020078-uk

Quick look at CPU Support and I think I may need to update BIOS: http://support.asus.com/Cpusupport/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=M5A99X%20EVO&cpu=FX-8350%28FD8350FRW8KHK,4.0GHz,8C,125W,rev.C0,AM3+%29&pcb=ALL&sincebios=1604&memo=
(Just tried updating using ASUS BIOS update tool and Its imcompatible with Windows 8.1 and even running it as XP SP3 doesnt work either)

Edit:
Managed to update BIOS and were now running 1708

So I've got an update.

Updated BIOs to the latest version, been playing my games and after a short while it turned off again. I've used ASUS AI Suite to monitor the temperature and according that, the temperature of the MB and CPU have been fairly normal at about 45c

Looking at the R9 290, I think that said it needed about 750W just to be on the safe side, so getting it now saves problems further down the line, I hope!!

Although since the new processor, Ive had problems every since, First with my gaming keyboard refusing to work in Windows and now this! Got the PSU arriving tommorow so should hopefully let you know if things are working or not.

Weird, I doubt the processor would be causing the problems though.

Established that it's not game specific, just been playing The Crew and pc died. PSU supposed to be here today but eBuyer tell me it will be tommorow..... Not my luck recently.

Think I fixed it before the PSU actually turned up. Reseated the memory as it could of been a memory freeze and also do a full discharge of the PC. Did this and nothing since. But PSU has turned up anyway and fitted it :)
