Ok.. a couple of postings have got me thinking that I've had my current monitor for FAR too long, and wouldn't mind a new one...

My current one is a 17" Sony HMD-A200. <A HREF="http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/displays/legacy/specs/hmda200.pdf" target="_new">this one</A> if you wish to see..

<b>What I dislike About it</b>
It's 17". Bigger is always better
All that plastic. WHY? some sort of fashion statement? it's like, as big as a 19" monitor anyway
It's highest (useable) res is 1152x864. I feel running games at that res is not really getting that much benifit from my 9800Pro.
The stupid stand arrangement - it doesn't have a swivelling base like every other monitor in the universe. instead it's got two legs under the front, and came with a piece of plastic that goes under the back to change the angle of the screen. Needless to say, this is a bit inflexible really (and I've since lost the plastic)...

<b>What I like about it</b>
It was free (a birthday present from the parents - horribly overpriced really but I wasn't paying  ).
It has a very nice bright image with good contrast (but then I guess that's due to trinitron)

So I want to get a nice 19" monitor to replace it - but I don't want to end up with a larger but lower quality picture.

scottchen Reccomended a Samsung 955DF, but I don't seem to be able to find one here in the UK. I found a <A HREF="http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=111879&cks=PRL" target="_new">Samsung SynchMaster 957p</A> which looks quite nice and is a fairly good price - anyone used one of these?

Anyone got any other suggestions? all input appreciated.

As far as viewsonic Goes, I've managed to find either
a "E92f+SB" <A HREF="http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=VSMA03NE3" target="_new">here</A>
Or a "G90fb" <A HREF="http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=VSMA03JJE" target="_new">here</A> (which does look quite sweet.. )

How about a Samsung syncmaster 959NF? That looks quite nice too (it's an Aperture Grill one, so does cost more..) Anyone used one of these?

The Samsung 957mb 19" I think is probably one of if not the best of 19" see if you can find that one, but price could double of the 955df.

Had a look at samsung's list of on-line retailers, and...
<A HREF="http://www.digiuk.com/productdetail.asp?id=285&c=301054&guid=&s=2" target="_new">bingo!</A>

Looks pretty sweet. I note it's cheaper than the 959NF I was thinking about though - Do you think there'd be any difference in brightness, IQ, etc between the two? I've looked around for reviews with the 959NF in, and apart from just an end-user 'Rate this product' type one I couldn't find anything...

The reason why i'm recommending the 957mb is because i have 2 of them myself, and my dad has one, it's f*cking great for gaming.

The other reason is because they're high quality, since i've worked at the computer shop, we've sold a LOT of these 957mb, and haven't got one returned, if they break after 3 years then we wouldn't know.

955DF, isn't as great, the max res's lower, lower refresh rate, but it's also high quality, only had 2 returns in the year i've worked.

Any recommendation that comes with an expletive attached has me sold I reckon  ..

Well, I'll research a bit more, but I'll order tommorrow and at the moment I'm quite set on the 957mb, unless anyone has a better suggestion!

Thanks for the input!

LOL. Just checked dimensions and my 17" sony is actually <i>wider</i> than this thing (957mb) - That's how much bloody plastic is in the thing

yup... 18" wide, and just over 5" of that is plastic. very odd. There's no way I'd have bought this thing myself, but like I said it was a birthday present which has served me well. It's been fed by 5 different Gfx cards (including my present 9800Pro), in 4 different motherboards.

About time I upgraded it really. I built a friend of mine a nice rig (same spec as mine but a Rev 2 8rda+ and a Ti4800) with no monitor because he 'already had one'.. and I find out that it's an ancient 15" thing limited to 800x600.. So I think I can convince him to buy this one off me

Yeah that looks like a sweet screen. slightly higher DP than the 957mb though (albeit a slightly lower price).

Suprised you have that screen but run @ 1152x864 though - I would've thought 1280x1024 minimum on something of that size/quality. 1152x is what I run things at on my sony now - I want higher res without the headache-causing 60hz refresh rate.

Just a suggestion, Phillips should be fairly easy to find in Euro-land (not sure about the uk particularly).

The 109B is a great monitor. Very nice, and the max resolution 1920x1440 is crisp and clean even at the corners.

Just in case you can find one of those for the right price.

I like the 100Hz... I would have to drop down to 85Hz for higher resolutions... maybe I will change later, but I am still thrilled to be at 100Hz... if going higher causes me to lose fps, then it is just not worth it... for Halo and FarCry, I am running at 1024x768...

I have a Samsung 900NF and have been very happy with it. It's now somewhere in the neighbourhood of 5 years old... and it keeps on ticking. It's nice to run 1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz... it'll do 1280 x 1024 @ 100Hz. The grille wires can be a bit distracting at first (especially if you've never used an aperature grille monitor), but eventually it gets to the point that you don't really notice them anymore. The only time you'll really notice them is on a white background... can't really see them at all while playing games.
