I have been in debates on buying/building a new PC and was wondering what you all thought about if I should upgrade or just buy a new PC. I know the specs are all on the older side as I bought this PC back in 2013-14 but would it still be able to run with the dogs if I upgraded the RAM to 32gb and the video card to a 4070 or 3070/3060?

Video card : XFX Radeon R9 390
CPU : AMD FX-8350 - Downgraded from FX-9590 cause crashing issues
Heat Sink : Asetek 570LXL
Fans : 5 x Thermaltake Riing 120mm
Mobo : Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
SSD : WD 1TB SA510
Optical drive : LG 14x BR Writable - Disconnected due to no use
Fan Control : Aerocool Touch 2000
Memory : 2x8Gb G-Skill Ripjaw x DDR3-2133
Cant remember the PSU but it is a 1000w bronze modular PSU

I mostly play games like Diablo 2 resurrected, CS:GO, Minecraft with the children, Wife plays WoW sometimes, Guildwars 2, CoD:WZ, Diablo 4 when it comes out and wanting to do all of the VR stuff that the R9 390 cant do.

Thanks for all of your input!

R9-390 sits about equal to the RX6500XT and GTX1650. About 30fps on the chart above.

FYI, the Ryzen 1600X outperforms an FX-8370 by about....25% on average (since the chart above doesn't include FX chips). So suffice to say your FX-8350 sits around the...70ish fps mark on the chart above. Different games exaggerate/minimize CPU differences.

16GB ram is still sufficient for today's games.

You're going to want to do a full upgrade.
Budget?
Country?
What monitor do you have? Or are you getting a new monitor?
I figured as much with how old my parts are. If I buy a new computer I'm look at spending around $2.5k so under that for upgrade. Also in the US and im currently not using anything to exciting as a monitor it is a samsung 32in TV.

If I do build a new PC I'm looking somewhere in this ball park for parts

CPU : Ryzen 9 7900x
GPU : 4070 Ti
RAM : 16-32gb DDR5
SSD : 1TB M.2
PSU : 850-1000W
MOBO : ASUS X670

This is just pulling parts off a prebuilt site. Building a new PC would be off the table for a few months if that is the case.

Oh the lovely side of playing with a 10+ year old computer xD

Would recommend a 2TB SSD for OS and games. Games are 100+GB each these days.

Throwing in the up-to-date CPU hierarchy list. Previous one was to get an idea of where your existing CPU sits:

Generally once you get past....6c/12t CPUs, the core count makes less/no difference (note the Ryzen 7600 to 7900 difference being 5% in games FPS). Past that, it comes down to core clocks and cache size*. If you want a 7900X, make sure you're doing a workload you know will actually benefit from that number of cores.

*High level: higher end CPUs tend to have larger caches to feed the additional cores. Oversimplification of cache/core relationships, bla bla. When >>> cores aren't being used by games, the additional cache will increase performance.

You'll certainly want to replace the PSU as well ina new rig. The 9590 may have actually worked, but not only do you need high wattage, you need high quality, and quality 1000W PSUs aren't typically only Bronze-rated, even in 2012.

In any case, I second the notion that you're looking at a new rig. The AM3+ CPUs always fared better as productivity CPUs than gaming ones; in the latter category, the contemporary Intel chips cleaned their clocks. You'd simply be unlikely to get much of a benefit from any GPU upgrade as you're already at the point beyond which FX CPUs get a justifiable benefit from GPU upgrades.

I would do a build like this. You can exchange the CPU for a 13500 to reduce price while maintaining similar performance. You can obviously swap out the monitor as well if its not your speed. Plenty on budget left to make a lot of changes if needed.
