Hello,

I’ve just upgraded my GPU to a 2070 super gigabyte gaming OC.

I’ve noticed in games such as BFV that I can play at 1440p or “4K” and my frames are at 60fps but do drop and stutter a bit, this doesn’t seem to matter whether I lower quality etc, it never really seems to be stable, sometimes just 5fps drop but this creates a stutter.

Monitoring the stats, my GPU doesn’t really go over 80% but CPU does hit around 95% and sometimes hits 100%

I have a 4K monitor but I’m happy with ultra 1440p for most of the time but like to crank it up if I can.

I currently have a i7 3770 16gb DDR3

Will I notice a difference in purchasing a i7 9700k and new mobo and RAM?

At the moment ray tracing is off the cards, even at 1440p I get around 30fps. When I have seen benchmarks in the 60fps for the 2070 super.

I know I’m never going to get really solid as 4K just isn’t there yet, but my machine is matching benchmarks I’ve seen online.

any input is appreciated as to whether it’s time to take the plunge and upgrade?

thanks

Thank you for your suggestion. Is there a gigabyte board that would be of similar quality.

me being picky as my GFX card is the gigabyte edition.

thanks

I’d upgrade, but I’d go with a Ryzen 3700x or 3800x based on your budget.

thanks,

I have been considering Ryzen, but I have enough budget for Intel, just don’t know whether it’s worth it for cost, I play games, not all the time, but when I do, I like them to look good and not stuttering/dropping frames.

would Ryzen be sufficient?

sorry actually just looked at the models you have suggested and they are more expensive than an i7 9700k or £30 less.

would intel not be the way to go at this price ?

What is your budget? Do you have parts you can reuse like PSU, SSD, HDD, case?

I will be re using. SSD, 2 x HDD, PSU, Case and GFX Card.

I’m looking just a CPU MOBO and RAM

I don’t have a fixed budget, but don’t want to spend money for the sake of it, like going for a 2070 super rather than 2080 due to minimal performance gain.

let’s say I’d like to hit £500 mark for the 3 components, but if it really will benefit me over Ryzen, I will stretch a little for the 9700k

if that makes sense :)

looking at a few other websites, a lot of people suggesting a 3600 Ryzen as this will give me full use out of my 2070 super and not bottleneck.

the price point of that is attractive and gives some upgrade room going forward.

but I’m happy to opinions....

Ryzen 3600 seems like an excellent choice. You may need to use the bios flashback on the motherboard for this build.

The Ryzen 3600 will be a great match for the 2070 and will provide a nice boost in frame rate while making a huge difference in your 1% lows while gaming. I know this because I made the same upgrade from the i7 3770k to the 3600.

thank you, sounds good.

Will I be able to upgrade at a later date with a b450 board?.

would I not benefit from an x470 or x570 board? I won’t be using any of the features, I don’t have any desire to use SLi. But wondering if I need one of these boards to upgrade the cpu going forward?

As for RAM a lot of sites suggest just 3000 or 3200?.

anyone got any builds they have done with the 3600? So I can see your mobo and ram combos?

thanks

It really depends on your upgrade plans...the chart linked below shows the results of testing loads on various B450 and x470 boards and how well they handle the power draw of 95-105w chips like the 2700x. If you only plan on staying with the 65w chips like the 3600 then pretty much any B450, x470, or x570 will do fine and you should shop based on features you want or need. If you plan on a future upgrade to something like a 3950x then a board with a solid VRM capable of handling the power draw of something like the 3900-3950x becomes more of a concern.

For ram I would go with a good 3600mhz C16 kit to get the best speed from the AMD infinity fabric which stays 1:1 up to 1800mhz and matches perfectly with the 3600mhz DDR memory (3600/2=1800) maximizing the internal chip speed.

My build is a 3600 on the entry level MSI x570 Gaming Plus with G Skill Royal 3600mhz cas16 memory...the Gaming Plus is a solid board for 65w chips but tends to run the VRM hot with the 95w chips like the 2700x.

You would be able to upgrade to another Ryzen 3 for sure, VRMs permitting. If you are talking about future as yet unreleased AMD chips, who knows? In that case you would have a better chance with X570. However, they are a lot more expensive, if you do want to go X570 I would avoid MSI, they dropped the ball on their VRM design. Asus have very good X570 VRM.

What is your monitor's resolution and refresh rate and what games do you play?

60hz refresh rate. 3840 x 2160. Purchased a while back before I realised how far off full stable gaming at this resolution would be.

so most newer games get dropped to 1440p although since installing my 2070 super I have been able to go into 4K with a few drops in places

battlefield V
Gears 5
Call of duty
Wolfenstien
CS GO
