I am looking to upgrade my out dated system for some power gaming. These are my current specs. Please recommend to what I should upgrade. Are there any components I can keep? I'm looking to spend no more than $500.00.

EVGA X58 FTW3 132-GT-E768-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58
SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 1TB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive
Intel Core i7-960 Bloomfield Quad-Core 3.2 GHz LGA 1366 130W
12GB CORSAIR XMS3 (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel
EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-2978-KR 4GB FTW Gaming
Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE

I had upgraded from GTX 470 SLI to the GTX 970 a week ago; such a huge difference even on my i7 960 system (OC to 3.8). The 970 is so fast (better fps) and quite; 470 just puts out so much heat and sounds like an airplane.

Anyway, I'm definitely going with the i7 4970k, maybe pair it with Corsair H90 cooler.

For the board, is the Sabertooth board better than ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER ATX Intel Motherboard? Looks like I may have to get memory as well (2 x 8GB) since these boards have 4 slots.

Yeah, mostly for gaming on highest settings maybe 1440p? Thinking of getting a 144Hz monitor eventually.

I think I will go with your previous suggestion:

Intel i5 6600k
Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151
and throw in G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400

Yes. That will do.
