Time Warner Feeling Heat From Google Fiber, Raises Speeds In Charlotte

..."Triple Play" service costing $119.99 per month that includes broadband speeds of up to 30 Gbps...

Too bad that's a typo, otherwise I'd move to Charlotte for TWC.

When I 1st got the TWC triple play it was $99, $33 for TV with DVRs, $33 for phone for unlimited nation wide calling, and $33 for internet. Every 3 months they would raise the cost and I'd have to call in and argue with TWC to get them to put the bill back. After awhile they said the "promotion" was over and raised my rates again. So far to keep my bill around $100, I've dropped my phone service, returned my DVRs, reduced my channel package. Last Monday they sent me a new bill raising my rates an additional $20 per month with no explanation. Looks like it might be a good time to drop the TV service and give Sling TV a try. Unfortunately in my area they are the only broad band option. Where is the over-site on this monopoly, oh that's right they are getting paid by TWC to look the other way.

Geez, I'm happy to live in Europe, then : 20 (twenty) bucks a month brings me unlimited landline calls across a hundred countries, 120 TV channels (that I don't use) and VDSL Internet connectivity (30Mbps down, 8 Mbps up - that's a hardware copper line limitation, actually, as I live in the countryside; living in town would get me 200 Mbps ). 35 bucks would get me free cell phone calls in several countries, a DVR and 2 hours of cell phone use.

Hypothetical Time Warner Announcement:

With a few minor tweaks to our network our Engineers were able to increase bandwidth by up to 500%.

Not sure which is scarier, the cliched "up to 300 megabits" or that they had 6 times the bandwidth they were not letting anyone use just so they could respond to google encroaching on their territory.

FCC basically forcing them to *gasp* actually innovate or lag behind competition willing to actually do so thanks net neutrality. This just demonstrates how scared larger ISP's are of competing with smaller ISP's over consumer satisfaction. No longer do they have a free monopoly right screw consumers and restrict competition from competing against them.

Still waiting for Time Warner in my area (Southern California desert cities area) to raise their speeds. But since it's a competition between only two major providers (Verizon and TWC), I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. Still stuck on the 15Mbps down/1Mbps up plan. My phone actually gets better speed than this over 4G.

WOW! Just look at them prices! I am currently paying $140 a month for a step above basic cable and 30 Mbps (Performance) Internet with Comcast! It's supposed to be their Double Play service, but I think I have their Double Pay service instead! 😛

I could damn sure use some more fiber in my diet! Some good ol' Google Fiber! 😛

200 Mbit internet, unlimited landline calls, and 120 tv channels for $20 a month? ... I'm getting so screwed here in SLC where just a 50 Mbit DSL connection is costing $50 and it's discounted right now for the first year so I can assume it will be rising soon >.<

Thank goodness Google fiber is coming here soon though. Maybe not Europe good but it's a step in the right direction.

We were getting 10Mbps down and 1Mbps upload with Time Warner cable. We went into the place and said we want faster Internet speeds. They said "Oh wow you guys are overpaying" and lowered our bill by $40 a month and upped the speed to 30 down 5 up.

Now, we need wireless devices capable of high speeds.

Google are giving away free Internet 5Mbps down and 1Mbps up. My god. That’s twice the speed of the average Australian Internet for free. I really need to move to a more forward thinking country.
It's all a trade I suppose.
We have strict gun control so we don't have mass shootings in schools but we have terrible Internet.
Maybe Ill just stay here.

Oh god, another complainer. People argue whether the FCC does something or not.

FYI, the FCC cannot do anything yet. There is a period before Net Neutrality will take effect.

I'm pretty sure you cannot attribute shootings just to gun control. If it were that simple, the issue would have been solved already.

We had a 34 person Massacre in the 90's without gun control. That resulted in strict gun control and we haven't had another mass shooting since.
Pretty clear what the problem was.

TWC had already came up with such a strategy in Austin TX 1 year ago I believe since there is also google fiber. I think it looks really ugly that a company wants to improve its services because there is already another company that has a better speed instead of focusing strictly on the customers by improving their network reliability. TWC still caps your upload speed to 20 or 30 mbs when you are on 200 or 300 mbs and they will try to raise your bill by $10 each January of each year. I always have to call them back each year to re-negotiate the price. Other than that I don't really complain about this company, I wish for sure they could lower their prices compared to other countries. In the US, they are still not charging fees by the minute for tech support, in some countries such as France for example, they will bill you right away the minute you call tech support even if there is nobody on the line after 30 minutes ... They might do that in the future in the US to rise their revenues.

I was referring to the united states. Gun control laws aren't as effective as it's much harder to protect the massive land border the US has with Canada and Mexico vs simple shipping imports in Australia. What works in one place may not work in another.

That’s true. It would be much harder to control the guns in the USA than in Australia. However a reduction in guns will result in a reduction in gun crime. It's a proven fact and it just makes sense.
It's also true that many other factors come into play such as the lack of welfare in USA making for a lot more desperate people. Australia is often thought of as a welfare state because we have a fairly generous system. People on welfare would dispute that claim but in comparison to many other countries it is a very good system.
Reducing the quantity of dangerous and to be honest unnecessary firearms (autos, semi-autos) it does make it much harder to a person making an impulse decision to go on a rampage. You won't stop a determined criminal of course but how many well organised mass school shootings are there? They are all someone with some kind of problem, losing their mind and going beserk.
Remove the accessibility you remove a large part of the problem.
Hunters and sports shooters can still own bolt action rifles with a licence and still participate in their hobby. But they just don't need those weapons designed and intended for a battlefield.
We also don't have a crazy rule from the distant past of having a right to carry a fire arm which I think helps as well. No person apart from police are carrying pistols on their hips.

The ISPs in any given area know that nobody will band together and quit service all at one time, forcing them to offer promotions to get a large chunk of customer base back. Call a city meeting for internet fairness, assemble, and plan a date to dump service all at once if they don't meet your demands and produce financial numbers. Unionizing is what keeps businesses fair.
