I am - as always - deadly serious :)

My personal solution is a small USB memory stick with a heavily
encrypted file on it containing all serial numbers, userid's,
passwords, url's, account access info, ...

The original file stays on the home computer, the stick travels with
me.

Don't even smile. I know a guy - a fellow sysadmin type, no less - who
posts his Microsoft VLKs into a web-page because it's such a pain in the
ass to install systems in his far-flung WAN empire and have to schlepp a
pile of 25-character codes around with him.

Bet Redmond would consider *that* an "unintended consequence" of a
serial-based system. Hope his web page really is secured.

I use the same system with a PDA/phone gizmo. But up until yesterday, I
hadn't considered that I would need to keep the license keys for *games*
close at hand.

What ! - they're the most important software when you're on the road :)

Initially I too was pissed about the system Matrix uses with regard to
serial numbers being required for install and patches. It is a pain
actually.

Since I almost always pay the extra $10 for the CD, I simply place a mailing
label on the case with the key for future installations/updates. It is
great to not have to have the disc when I play on the laptop when
travelling.

All in all, in retrospect, I like the system Matrix has adopted.
