Hey there,

First off I'm not 100% on doing an upgrade, I'm just shooting the breeze a bit here.
I play a lot of cod modern warfare as well as borderlands 3 and in both of these games I cannot play top top graphical settings. specifically in cod I play on the middle line of the settings even though Nvidia GF Experience wants me to optimise slightly below these setting but the games playable so I leave it at that. Anyway I am just wondering if I choose to start upgrading then where should I start.
System Specs:

Intel Core i7 7700k
16 gig DDR4. 8 gig in slots #2 and #4
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 8 gig 139 MHz
250 gig SSD
1tb HDD
Windows 10
Acer Predator 1440p

Solution
Your system is pretty solid for 1440P gaming.

For a new CPU you would need a new Mobo and CPU and it would either be a B450/X570 and a Ryzen 3700X or something like a Intel Z390 and 9700K.

The 1080 is still a solid card falling somewhere around a AMD RX 5700XT in performance which is just below a RTX 2070 Super. And ray tracing IMO is not a worthwhile reason to upgrade due to it huge performance hit in games and IMO little improvement to visual enhancements.

I myself have a 7700K and I'm waiting for AMD to release their next Ryzen CPUS then I'll probably will pick a new on sale or used B450 mobo and 3700X or 3900X CPU.
