Tips to overclock sapphire 7970 ghz 3gb

Hey i would like to hear from other 7970 owners about how they went about overclocking this gpu. My system is an i5-3570k and 8gb of cas 8 1600mhz ram and windows 8, 850 xfx xxx ed silver psu. I have gpu-z, heaven benchmark and ccc and trixx installed. So far my understanding is to bump ccc gpu overdrive tab power to 20% and add 5 or 10 mhz to core clock and check heaven bench for skipping and gpu temps.what about gpu mem clock? And what about trixx and voltage or should i leave that alone? What are highest temps should go? Should i set fan to 100% while doing heaven bench? What are recommended stable mhzvolts and mem settings to shoot for? I want a boost but i dont want it to get to hot while playing games for a few hours. Thanks!

with my 7970 i moved the cpu and memory slider all the way to the right meaning I had my core at 1125...idr about my memory but it will overclock as far as the CCC lets you...i didnt change any voltages either. also I overclocked it in msi afterburner
the highest temps it should go to is 85...i have lest my fan speeds stock

Hi,

Start with either the core or memory, don't try and overclock both at the same time.

Increase the core clock by 20mhz, run Heaven maxed out for one loop.

If it's still stable repeat the previous step.

When it becomes unstable and if load temps permit (<85C) up the voltage by 0.02V and re-run heaven

If temps are to high then reduce the clock speed.

Most HD7970's get to roughly 1250/1700.

Stay below 1.25V and 85C.

Okay, first, if you have a reference card with a reference cooler, I wouldnt recommend any overclock over 200mhz, thats all. I wouldnt bother about overclocking on a reference cooler as its useless

If you have a reference card with a non reference cooler, just cut the bullshit and push your fans up to 100% max with no user profiles. You can set it later. Then, push your clocks straight to 1ghz and push the voltage up to 1.2V. Loop heaven or any stress programs. If after half an hour it did not have any errors and temps are below 85 max, push the clocks up to 1.1ghz. Continue previous step, if temps exceed, stop overclock and refer to the last step. If benchmark crashes, push voltages up straight to 1.25V and redo benchmark. If everything passes, I would recommend 1.1ghz as a max as you dont get much performance after that. And then slowly reduce voltage until failure.

If you have a power edition or a lightning edition, you are set, those are my fav to overclock. FIrst, push the fans to 100%, next, push power limit to max, then push the core clock to 1.2ghz. And voltage to 1.25V. DO the test, if it passes, continue pushing up the clocks till it reaches 1.3ghz THAT WILL BE MY MAX.

@crazypotato reference cooler is fine i have my 7970 at 1125 core and the highest I have seen my card go is 85c without modifying fan profile settings
