Mozilla seem to heavily sponsor servo, which is a "Parallel Browser Engine Project" written in Rust. Check it out: https://github.com/servo/servo

This news is not surprising, given Firefox declining market share due to reasons not related to security. Firefox aim right now seems to be mobile presence and marketplace parity with Chrome, which is the right move IMO.
The majority of people care about privacy, but not at the expense of features, performance and convenience.

Still, against such well established giant as Chrome, it's gonna be an uphill battle for Firefox, so I think they're banking on servo as their new shiny backend in the future.
