Before I Drop $50.00 on a new game I Make sure to check at least 3
sites for reviews. The ones that get 5 Stars from most reviewers get me
to buy their game. The others I Rent or wait and buy used.
Currently My gaming library has a handful of keepers that will never
be sold. They include the following games: BF1942, Star Wars
Battlefront, Gran Turismo 4, Max Payne, Return to castle Wolfenstien,
Call of Duty, Men Of valor and Halo.
These Games are Winners for their own Reasons and the biggest loser
of this year for me was ... Doom 3. Just too damn dark is my only
complaint.

Actually I never sell any game, going back to the DOS days. But here's
a few I'd never give up, even if I was starving:

System Shock - The original. Yeah SS2 was good, but not as good as the
first one for me.

Ultima Underworld I & II. - Classics, I still play them whenever I have
to use a PC without 3D acceleration (my laptop).

Combat Mission series - I'll never play all the custom missions, and
PBEM pretty much ensures that I'll have this game for a long, long time.

Tie Fighter - Still the best.

Doom series - especially with all the updated versions like Doomsday,
jDoom, etc.

Morrowind - One of the best games I've ever played. A handful of mods
can completely change the game world, constantly keeping it fresh.

Diablo Series, Dungeon Keeper series - truth be known I'm not a big fan
of either, but my wife plays them constantly so I must always have a copy.

Half Life - Fresh to this day.

Call of Duty - intense from start to finish, no matter how many times I
play it.

The original "keepers" were the Doom/DoomII/Quake series - because of both
multiplayer and quickloading single player fragfests.

GTAIII and VC - with the addition of Multi Theft Auto they are infinitely
playable.

BF1942 and mods.

Half Life - mainly for the mods but also because it is replayable in SP.

MaxPayne 1 and 2 - occasionally fire them up to experience the quality.

Mafia - same reason as MP.

Star Wars Jedi Knight - the best in the series IMO and great fun in
multiplayer.

Deus Ex. Even if I got bored of playing this, I would keep it. One day I
will frame the box and put it on my wall.

Train Simulator - one day I'll get around to playing this properly!

I throw my vote in with Lords of Midnight and Doomdarks Revenge,
although the latter was much harder.
If we're going retro, then I also vote for:

Jet Set Willy

IGI (for the time being anyway)
Max Payne
Black & White (keep coming back to it, probably coz I keep losing 🙁
Civ 2 (who needs a social life when you've got Civ installed?)

Well, it's not really been around long enough to earn it's place as a
"keeper" in the sense the OP meant. He's talking about titles that have
stood the test of time.

Come on, this is a thread about old games.
This is a place to take pride in the older games that are just so good,
we can't be parted from them.
Just for once, can't you take pride in the games you have, instead of
attacking someone else?

Why wouldn't you play it now? In addition to the original PC
version, there is a remake with some enchancements added, coded as a
stand alone Java program so it can run on pretty much anything.

The SAS missions were a bite of a bore though, having to go through
a bunch of it both coming and going was annoying.

The single worst moment in CoD was manning the AA gun and shooting
down wave after wave of enemy planes while under fire from wave after
wave of Germans up on the roof. It went from high quality FPS right
to cheesy 80s arcade game shooter.

TBH all my games are keepers. In between quality releases I'll sit and
wonder what to play and I'll scan the bookcase with the games and say
'aah, Wolfenstein - haven't played that for a while' and then re-install
it. Only game on the bookcase I haven't installed for a long time is
Vietcong. Never really enjoyed it. I wont get rid though. One day
I'll reinstall and probably enjoy it.

I was one of the ones that didn't find D3 too dark. Have you googled
for fixes? It's the kind of game where, once you've played through it,
you can keep dipping into it. Last night I played through the Hell
level again with a couple of friends - worth it just to see them go
'WOW!' 🙂

What, Half-Life 2, the great Second Coming of Jesus of Gaming, doesn't
appear on anyone's list?

Oh wait, that's the game that's only playable as long as Valve is around to
give you permission to play the game and/or the so-called offline mode
hasn't gotten around to its latest mysterious "This operation can't be
completed in offline mode" burp. And of course when you finally replace your
PC, you can't reinstall it at all without Valve being around to give you
permission.

Never mind...

Too ugly. I'm a graphics ho, and Dungeon Master (like my once favorite
Lords of Midnight) just hurts my eyes.
The lack of an auto-map feature coupled with the fact that the maps I
once drew were lost in a move don't help either.

Lords of Midnight now that's a game I remember playing a lot on my
Speecy 48K. A classic game of its time.

Loved Manic Miner but this just seemed to be to complex for the sake of
it and also the die once and then die in a loop until you have no lives
left. Chuckie Egg was/is another favorite of mine.

some of the best games of the era.

Heck yes. It, and the sequel Doomdarks Revenge, are among my best
gaming experiences ever, but it really was very much "of its time". I
tried playing Doomdarks Revenge on a Spectrum emulator, and I just
couldn't do it, it was too dated.
To me it's a bit like very early silent films - historically
important, great for their day, but it's difficult to actually see
their greatness as films in their own right any more.

Descent: Freespace - had just as much fun as I did playing X-Wing for
the first time.

Grim Fandango - the best adventure from LucasArts

The Secret of Monkey Island - the graphics are showing their age but the
humor is just as amusing

Fallout 1 & 2 - great characters, great combat, great setting -great
everything.

Heroes of Might & Magic III - still play it every week -nice, light
strategy game.

Half-Life - the amount of enjoyable levels and mods created by the
gaming community is staggering.

Doom 1 & 2 - still playing them after all these years.

Gothic 1 & 2 - it might be just the result of the recent drought in RPGs
but these are amazing contributions to the genre.

C&C: Red Alert 2 - good game to blow fifteen minutes on; nothing complex
in the least bit -just simply fun like Doom.

The Bard's Tale trilogy - currently have a party in the third Bard's
Tale braving the cosmos. I gave up attempting to map the last few
dungeons in the first Bard's Tale years ago but it was a nice enough
experience until the end.


I've lost my disks to Master of Magic or otherwise I'd include it as
well. There's several other games I've kept too but I haven't had the
time to replay other than the first time through: System Shock 2,
Dungeon Keeper 2, The Dig, Full Throttle, Dark Reign, Curse of Monkey
Island, LeChuck's Revenge, StarCraft, Indiana Jones & The Fate of
Atlantis, Planescape: Torment, Quake 1 & 2, No One Lives Forever 1 & 2,
and The Longest Journey. Everything else I've traded or given away as I
should be able to having paid for the license to these games.

Heroes of Might and Magic II
Civ II
Shadow of Yserbius (Multiplayer D&D type game played through the Sierra
Network, later ImagiNation Network - also a standalone version).
Wizardry - Proving Grounds
Zyll
Enchanter - would keep if I could find a downloadable copy...those 5.25
disks just don't do anything anymore
Combat Mission series
Close Combat III
Starcraft
Descent Freespace
X-Wing/Tie Fighter

and a few others that I just can't recall right now.

Easy enough to find the true keepers for me, I just look at the
games still on my HD after 2+ years that have been reinstalled on my
newest box.

In no particular order.
Harpoon 3
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction
Civilization 3
Steel Panthers: World at War

What about you? Did you go out and get it, like you told us all to?

More to the point, what old games do you keep and replay time and time
again? Everyone else has talked about their favourite old games. What
are yours?

Well honestly ALL of my games are "Keepers", meaning, I do not ever sell
games. That's why I have well over 2000 games in my library, and counting.

But as for games I personally think are superb and always keep coming back
to, that would be:

Empire Deluxe for Windows
Warlords II Deluxe
Master of Orion II
Hereos of Might & Magic III
Quake (the GL version)
Might & Magic 4/5 (World of Xeen)
Total Annihilation (+ expansions)
Starcraft (+ broodwar)
Planescape: Torment
Fallout 1 & 2
Half-Life

Notice that none of these games are very new. I don't put new games on the
list because they're still too new to know if I'll never be uninstalling
them or not, I'm still playing them for the first time. For example, your
list contains a bunch of newer titles, which I'd never put on my list,
simply because they are too new to know if they stand the test of time or
not.

Also I will occasionally install older games and replay them, even if they
aren't a game I would leave installed all the time.

Not to mention that if you have enough money for all the PC games
you're going to buy and a little left over you spend on consoles
you're a traitor to pc gaming, even if you spend 1000 times more a
year on pc games than he does.
