I'm currently using a 27" 2k IPS 5ms 60hz monitor and looking to upgrade.

I have a 1080ti water cooled with a 7700k water cooled and looking at getting a asus 27" 2k IPS 5ms 165hz or a asus 27" 2k TN 1ms 165hz.

I love the color of my current IPS and never had a TN before, is the 1ms a big difference over the 5ms since both are 165hz?

I think the 5ms vs 1ms argument is magnified by how fast your monitor refreshes. On a 60hz monitor you might not be able to tell the difference, or its small enough you can ignore it. At 165hz it will definitely be noticeable. I would go with the TN panel here.

Essentially it comes down to how much ghosting you can tolerate. A slower response time = more ghosting. https://pcmonitors.info/articles/factors-affecting-pc-monitor-responsiveness/

The big question is what type of games do you play? Are you big into competitive FPS games where the difference in 4ms will mean win or lose? If you are, than go for the TN panel. But if you play some fps, but also play a lot of RPG and other games, then go for the IPS panel cause it will look better.

For me, I care more about the colors and the viewing angles than the minimal lag time difference.

5ms is less noticeable on a higher refresh screen not more noticeable.

You will NEVER see an IPS monitor rated at less than 5ms because its impossible.

It irrelevant anyway , its normally a marketing gimmick & the ratings are done on a beat case scenario , you find when these monitors are tested properly under proper gaming use they are all pretty much between 12-16ms in reality.

The official numbers are cherry picked GTG response times, but the relative difference still tells you something.

The TN monitor might really be 10ms and the IPS monitor 15ms.

That actually makes the difference more relevant, as 15ms is much more noticeable than 5ms would be.

Response time has nothing to do with competitive gaming. It's about ghosting. It applies just as much to watching video content as it does to playing games.

Maybe it is about ghosting for you, but people tell me they don't like it because there is a lag from what is being rendered on the screen, to what is actually happening.

That's input lag.

1ms vs 5ms...unless you have bionic eyeballs, you will never notice.

TN vs IPS....this depends 100% on the individual panels in question. I've owned (and currently own) TN panels that are better than the very good matched set of IPS they replaced.
