Who does it and who doesn't? Legally, we have to or we can cost our business $1MM's if there is leaked information. It should be required, no? If my equipment has value then I might get a revenue share. Who doesn't love free money?

What devices?

If just storage devices you can secure erase HDDs using DBAN or a similar program that writes random number over all sectors multiple times. With an SSD a single secure erase should suffice. For an added level of comfort you can write a bunch of junk to the drives and then secure erase or DBAN them again.

If it is entire computers, then do the above to the storage devices and then install a Linux build so they have an OS for the buyer.

Given proper procedures, there should never be "leaked information".
There are companies that will put your drives through an actual shredder, and provide verified documentation of the destruction.
Sell off the rest of the system as fits its purpose.

Working hardware deserves to keep working. Do what you have to for the data by using proper companies for that sort of thing, but the rest can generate a small chunk back. Even more if you just let your employees sell it for you can keep part of the sale as a 'commission'.

The business has gotten beneficial use out of the device and the "value" has been diminished to zero via depreciation. I am of the opinion of recycle it. That ensures you don't contribute to the electronics pollution. Have a definite end of life, which allows the metals to be reclaimed and the toxins to be contained.

And the first step to recycling is reuse so if it is still working, pass it on or sell it to someone who will use it.
