Hey guys! I'm wondering if I should do the full transition to the new skylake cpus. I have a Asus z97 mobo paired with a i5 4690k, I gb crucial 1600 mhz ram, and a Gtx strix 970. I was planning on just buying the i7 4790k but I found a friend that would like to buy my board and cpu for about 300. So should I upgrade to it cause it'd only be around another 300 for me. I play a lot of games like cs, gta, waiting for over watch and so on and been wanting to stream pc games and not just the ps4. Would it be worth it to go for the skylake or just get a new mobo and the i7 4790k?

Current Build :
Motherboard: Asus z97
CPU: i5 4690k
GPU : Gtx 970 Asus Strix
Ram : Crucial 1600Mhz 8gb
Psu: Evga 650 Watt G2 Gold
SSD : Samsung 500gb 850 Evo Pro
Western Digital 1tb Blue

Potential Build :
Motherboard : Asus Z170 ( $139.99)
CPU: i7 6700k ($318.99
GPU: Gtx 970 ( Sli in the near future)
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16gb 3000mhz ($89.99)
Same Psu, SSD, and Hard-drive.

Prices from a local microcenter and my friend giving me $300 so total price for me will be around 350. So should I or should I do something else? Thank you!

With what you have now and what you do with it, I think you would be disappointed with either upgrade. You would see more benefit by upgrading the GPU to a 980Ti or the soon to be released Pascal cards.
If you didn't toss in streaming I would have said to just keep what you have. You already have a solid rig but if you are not satisfied with how the i5 is streaming and plan on upgrading then I'd say go for Skylake since you have a friend willing to buy your platform. The i7-4790k is probably $290 at microcenter so for a letter extra I don't think upgrading to Skylake is a bad idea.

Don't expect night and day performance. You'll really only benefit when streaming. I side with the above posts and saving that money for a better graphics card will yield greater returns.

Would an i7 really be all that better for streaming? I cant imagine it would be but I dont stream at all so I really dont know.

A little over a month ago I upgraded from a 2600K at 4.5Ghz with 8GB of DDR3 1600 to this 6700K at 4.6Ghz with 16GB of DDR4 3200. I just moved the 980 Ti I had over to the new build. I'm seeing roughly a 5 FPS increase across the board in games like Fallout 4, The Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. That says I wasn't CPU limited and barely bottlenecked at all with a 2600K and a P67 motherboard with PCI-E 2.0. I do game at 1440p though. A lower resolution would likely see bigger gains.

So yeah if you want better gaming performance get a better graphics card.

Yeah I know it won't be that much different but I'm going to be selling my friend my old motherboard and cpu so i was just wondering if I should just get the 6700k and new motherboard.

Yeah I see it all over the forums and stuff that it won't be a big upgrade but I'm going to have to buy a new motherboard and cpu anyways and yeah I have a friend buying my old stuff for a decent price so I was just wondering if I should just get the new cpu and motherboard or stick with the older ones but i mean the price difference would only be around $50~100 depending on what i pick.

Yeah I was planning on getting another gtx 970 or a 980/ti later and I was just wondering If i should get the new cpus with the z170 boards or just stick with the i7 4790k for about $50~100 less because I'm going to have to buy a new motherboard and cpu anyways because my friend is buying my current motherboard and cpu.

I mostly upgraded for motherboard features. P67 was lacking. If you just have the money and want to do it then go for it. No reason not to and there are worse things to spend your money on. :)
