Question To make a LAN available over the Internet

I work in a hospital where they use a proprietary web based interface which works on their local area network. I wish there was a way by which I could make the website accessible over the Internet. I would like to make it work without going through the IT department and all that.

That would be called a VPN. If they don't have it already, then it is likely for HIPAA compliance/security. Can't have someone log in remotely at Starbucks and leaving PII and medical information laying about.

This is exactly why the IT dept exists.

Done wrong, and you'll expose the entire LAN and its data to the outside world.
And it is VERY easy to get that wrong.

Not good.
