to open command prompt

My laptop only powers up and I can only get into the BIOS at the moment. How do I open the command prompt (CMD). The operating system is messed up.

Have you tried pressing F8 during boot-up?
This would bring a menu where (among other things) you can choose Safe Mode with Command prompt

Well, if it boots to the point where it allows you to start in safe mode, do that, it will only start processes that are needed to boot up the system. If you aren't getting that screen, you might have to reset the computer, or re install/repair the OS, so if you have a Win7 disc, or whatever OS you have, put that in your laptop and select repair, if you want to reset, select re install or install.

There aren't many other ways you can get into the system, if the OS is messed up, you might have to wipe the harddrive and get a new OS.

At this point command prompt isn't going to help much.

Can you boot to safe mode? Do you have the windows install discs? Do you have a recovery partition? What is the brand and model of the laptop? What version of windows are you running. Is it a legit. activated copy? If you got a cmd. what do you think you can do with it? Does the laptop have a disk drive? Please reply to each of the ?'s and then maybe you can get some help.
