To overclock my q6600 to 3.0 ghz maybe even 3.33

I have a similar question and hence I am also posting it over here.

I would like to know the limits of a safe overclock by changing only the FSB and not tampering around with any of the voltages for a Q6600-G0.

Also can you recommend a cheap P35 Asus/Gigabyte/abit board for the purpose?

in some cases no you will not have to change anything other than the fsb, but it's not a gaurantee.

My MSI P35 neo2-Fr runs, by Q6600 G0 fine just changing the boot strap jumper to the 333 setting.

From there by adding voltage it will go >3.6Ghz

but I prefer to leave it at 3.0Ghz as at that speed it is plenty fast enough.

I don't recommend this kind of OC'ng,u have to play with voltage to get a good result,here is the voltage range for Q6600 G0:

Also i don't think its possbile to get a good OC (like 3.0 or more) with only FSB.you have to change the voltage to get better OC results and there are lots of more things,its really easy read the OC'ng guide+Temp guide and u will be fine:

Also ASUS P5K-E WIF,GIGABYTE P35 DS3R/DS3L and ABIT IP35 PRO are solid P35 boards.

Also, will such an overclock require a separate CPU cooler or will the Intel stock cooler suffice? What are acceptable temperature ranges for the CPU. I should mention that I reside in Chennai, India where day temps are generally in the 35-40 deg. C range.

Why do you say that a 3.0ghz overclock will need voltage adjustments? This is not true. My Q6600 is Prime95 (all 4 cores) over 48 hours on each test.

On most quality boards a voltage jump is not required for 3.0Ghz.

I agree on getting an aftermarket cooler, If you are on a budget the xigmatek is a very good cooler, if you have a bigger budget (and case ) then I can recommend the ThermalRight Ultra120 Extreme, I have a Nexus 120pwm fan on mine, most of the time it's silent and even at full speed it's not noisey. My temps never go above 56 degrees.

My experience is with "Good Cooling", the Q6600 will safely OC 3.5Ghz so long as you don't exceed voltage 1.45v. If it won't hold a stable OC above that voltage, leave it alone. 3.6Ghz is relatively stable but causes some instability at times under stress, so not worth it. 3.7Ghz will boot and run but usually error out under stress after a short time without upping voltages beyond reasonable limits, again, not worth it.

Also, for the person who recommended the TRUE, i disagree. the TRUE has hopeless build quality: the base is ridiculously curved!! unless you have the time for lapping, DONT GET IT!! Xigmatek HDT-S1283 FTW!!
