Hey all need some input form those with bigger brains than myself. Have tried learning what I can but loosing myself in all this info.

Current i5-3570k
Cheap af Mobo (don't know what it is)
8 GB Ram
AMD Nitro 480 GPU

I'd like to increase my performance for current games i'm playing. Also to allow me to stream without loosing performance.

as far as I can see I need to upgrade my Ram ofc, but what i'm wondering is should I

a) Look for a 1155 mobo (hard to find a good one now it seems) and get some ram, a cooler and OC my i5

or b) just gut the damn thing and maybe shoot for a i5 6600 and a fresh mobo etc.

Any thoughts? :)

Solution
CPU-Z will tell you what your current motherboard actually is.
Perhaps it will let you overclock.

Your i5-3570K is still a very good processor.
Particularly if you can overclock a bit.

Likely you can find a suitable motherboard on ebay.
Look for one with a Z68, P67, Z75 or Z77 chipset that will let you oc.
Probably $80-$100.

On upgrading ram, that is not done both securely and cheaply.
One can add 8gb, cheaply but it is not guaranteed to work.
A 2 x 8gb kit can be added with guarantee to work, but it will cost more.

I would opt for the 2 x 16gb kit and keep your 8gb around as a spare.
You could try it and see if it runs giving you 24gb.

If you go the skylake route, do not bother with a locked i5-6600. It is only marginally...

A i5-6600K with an overclock and a z170 motherboard with ddr4 ram can be some 40% stronger.
Or, i7-6700K would be a tad better for streaming.

I might get a cooler regardless. It will be quieter regardless and can be carried forward to a new build.
I like the review of the $35 scythe kotetsu 120mm cooler:

Any new i5 won't get you much more performance without overclocking anyway.

This is the only board I've found that might work without going for a used board on Ebay:

If you want, you can try going for this or a used board and a new cooler, assuming your power supply is fine. You should get at least over 4GHz no problem. If you want a bigger performance upgrade, then you might need to bite the bullet and replace the CPU and board with something newer. You'd still need a K edition CPU with overclocking to get a real performance boost, or at least an i7-6700K or i7-4790K for their 4.0GHz base frequency if you choose not to overclock.

Thank you for the update, sounds like upgrading the mobo is the way to go. Mine is currently a GA-Z77N-WIFI but from what i understand due to space restriction its far from ideal to OC with.

is there anything on this list that would be suitable?

There isn't much information out on these older models so I really don't know my ass from my elbow with this stuff.
