Question To upgrade to Win 11, will my mobo handle CPU upgrade?

Will an Intel i7-8700 (SR3QS) work on the Dell Optiplex 5040 motherboard that currently has an i7-6700?

I want to upgrade to an 8th gen Intel Core cpu to be able to install Windows 11 and have it do upgrades in the future. I am aware how to install Win 11 on unsupported hardware, but I prefer to be able to get updates.

My concern with upgrading only the cpu is the chipset on the 5040 motherboard. Will the 8th-gen cpu work on my mobo?

Short answer, no.

While the physical socket is the same LGA1151, few if any motherboard chipsets will do 6th Gen AND 8th Gan CPUs.

i7-8700 is essentially equivalent to an i5-12400 and up.
