from what i have read, tomb 2 should not need anything special to run on xp.
but when I run it the starting movies lock up after a few seconds.
I can ESC out of them and play the game, but would like to see the fmvs
in-game.

any ideas?

Sounds like you need an updated Rad/Binks player or tools. Check here:

Hm. Odd that. what video card and drivers are you using? With mine, I
have to set a couple things to application control in the driver control
panel or LOTS of things crash. Especially TR games.

nvidia geforce fx 5200
driver 5.6.7.2

That's the driver set I was using before I installed Doom3. I'm using
61.77 now, and don't know how any of the TR's will do with them.
TR2,3,4,5 and TR AoD did work using 53.03 and 56.72 for me.
In the driver taskbar applet, Performance and Quality, make sure that
Antialiasing and Anistropic filtering are set to application preference.
AoD and TR2 wouldn't run at all any other way for me. I know it can be
tricky getting some of these to run, at times. Not much explanation for
that either. But don't give up. It's always been some simple setting
if everything is installed right :)
