I have a general comment about this site.
I have come to the site to read an article, which is what the site authors want, right? I click on the article, and instead of going to the article, I get a pop-up window asking me if I want to subscribe to a newsletter. I am doing the behaviors that you want...visit the site to begin with and clicking a link to read an article so that you can show me more ads...and you STOP the process with an annoying pop-up?
And then once I get to the article...AUTOPLAY videos about something NOT RELATED to the article that I am reading, with audio? Before I can read the article, I need to scramble to hit the mute button on my PC, and then find and close down the video.
It seems like I am doing what you want to start...visiting, reading articles, but then you are doing your best to make it an inconvenient, annoying experience, and I can only think that you do not care if you drive me (and other users) away.
I realize other websites do similar things, but it is equally annoying there, and the annoyance factor is influencing how often I visit certain websites. And Tom's annoyance factor is pretty high at the moment.
Reconsider what your priorities are: If it is to show this other crap even if it drives your readers away, then it is your right to continue to do so. If your priority is to maintain / recapture Tom's status as a go-to site for tech articles, etc., then you really need to make it a more user-friendly site.
