Too hot?

I have K-6-2 500 MHz AMD prosessor. It runs about 70C in heavy use. I just wonder if it is going to burn or melt my motherboard. I've been useing it few moths.

That's a bit hot, yes. It's not about to melt or damage anything, but you might want to cool it off a bit. What kind of heatsink/fan do you have on it?

Apple? Macintosh? What are these strange words you speak?

I'm useing a Thermaltake Chrome Orb. I have tried several times and it is firmly attached to prosessor with thermal paste. It is already too big for my motherboard. The ATX power cord is too close to prosessor. I had to saw 4mm out of its side ot fit it in. I had before a Titan Deluxe but it wasn't any better and kept awful noise.

I think the general consensus on this board is the orbs are basically junk. But for what you have it probably should be adequate.

2 things to look at is case cooling and CPU cooling.

For your case you should have a fan drawing in air and a fan exausting air out of the opposite side. If the air in your box is real hot don't expect even the best heatsink to cool it down.

If you do indeed have good case cooling..next thing is to replace the heatsink. There are many many options out there if you want to improve what you have. My best low budget solution is the volcano2. You can usually find one for aroudn 10 bucks and they do a reasonably good job if you don't really plan to overclock.

If you want to find out if you have good case cooling you can try this. Open your case and point a household fan into your box and let it rip. You got to figure you aren't going to get much better airflow than that. If you see a huge drop in temp like suddenly you are at 50C instead of 70C..that would be a good indication that your case cooling sucks.(if you have a temperature system monitor thats even better) If you have a temp mon for your system I would say it should not be more than 20C above room temp. (I am pulling that numbber out of the air mind you.)
