Too many choices, but can't decide!

I am looking to build a new computer, and I'm looking for a solid build. I want something that will last me a good long time with potential for future upgrades.

My current choices are the E6600 and the X1950XTX. I want a motherboard to hold these two, with some potential for overclocking, not extreme overclocking, and the ability to add a crossfire board in the future.

My problem with the current boards is they do not seem very helpful, or special. I have 2 x SATA HDD's going in and 4 x ATA (1 x HDD and 3 x CD/DVD) drives. Assuming I use one PCI slot for the extra IDE controller, a slot for my sound card would be nice. I am willing to let go of the IDE if need be. The main concern is the better Mobo. 😀

The durrent Mobo of choice, just speculating, is the Intel D975Xbx. Is that a good choice given my situation? Also, it says it takes ram speeds at 533/667. It doesn't work with 800 or 1066? Any recommendations of a matching ram?

Perhaps any suggestions on a set of RAM and a Mobo. Price is not a big deal.

It is the EXACT same thing as the X975XBX2, but for half the price!

GPU:
8800 GTS - 450$
X1950XTX - 400$+

8800 GTS = 2x X1900XT.

*Note - remmember to buy from eVGA!

RAM:
Get DDR2-533 RAM, unless u want to overclock, then get DDR2-667 or DRR2-800. You will need to change the FSB to 333Mhz, 400Mhz or above accordingly.

CPU:
E6400 and E6600 give abt the same performance, and the E6400 costs 75$ less. The E6600 has twice the cache though, and can overclock higher, so its ur choice.
 
Or perhaps the asus p5w DH which is a great board with corssfire support.

but again, definatly get a 8800GTS so that atleast you will have DX10 cards and wont need to upgrade for a very long time.

But the GTX requires too much CPU speed, which would mean a 6800 is preferred for that card...

GTX is not overkill unless u have a 19" or smaller screen.

No no no, it does not require a 3.0Ghz Core 2 Duo, thats just a bunch of hooey!
An E6400/E6600 are much more than enough, and if they werent an X6800 wouldnt be either, because an X6800 isnt an much better than an E6400..
Also, if u want a 3.0Ghz Core 2 Duo, just overclock the one u have.. any Core 2 Duo can get to 3.0Ghz or more, but u need a good fan, like the Zalman CNPS 9500.

Im very happy to have changed ur mind - u will now have a much better system for much less. Enjoy!

The DFI you linked is comparable to the bad axe , the Intel is a Bad Axe 2, better quad core support, more voltage option, better OCing.

Not comparable!

With the exception that the BadAxe2 has lousy Vcore stepping, not many other voltage changes and doesnt go as high of course.
While the experts overclockers have already been able to squeeze the good juice (500Mhz) out of the DFI 975X.

Really?? I thought there was a driver issue with the DFI and that it couldnt overclock past 325Mhz (unless u want to risk their Beta drivers).
 
Dont ask me that again, because I would never talk out of my ass. But youre a n00b here, so I'll please you:

Not only was the BIOS revision, but a whole new board revision.

The new revision, as you can see is a whole new rework for the RAM. This doesnt only fix any booting problem but improves overclocking.
 
with the latest BIOS the DFI 975X Infinity is doing ~440fsb & 1 guy with a heavily modded one has done 500fsb.

ditto what rwaritsdario said (even though I have fewer posts than you here) but even the old revision with the new BIOS improved dramatically.
