Question Too many CPU handles causing low FPS in CSGO? Hardly any programs in the background.

Hi,

I am only getting 100-200 FPS on all low in CSGO. I have a GTX 1660 TI and an I7-9750H. I performed a DDU and then factory reset my computer with hardly any change in FPS.
However, there is one thing I noticed which could be the culprit. I have over 90,000 CPU handles in task manager. The problem though is that I have barely any background apps running. Most of the programs using the most handles are system executables that I am too afraid to touch. One thing I also found is that I have over 30+ programs of svchost running. They seem to be using the most handles. I don't know if this is normal or not, but I still don't feel like messing around with that stuff until I know for sure what I am doing.

So could this be the reason to my rather low FPS? Temperatures for my CPU are around 70-80, GPU temperatures are around 60, and my drivers are up to date.
It also might be important to mention that this is a laptop.

Thanks.

Hi Rexaura, the number of handles is normal for your laptop. The most likely culprit is your CPU clock speeds while playing. If you haven't tried before, try plugging in your laptop while gaming, and make sure your CPU clock speeds are at their advertised boost clock speeds. If that doesn't work, try going into NVIDIA control panel > Manage 3D settings > Use High performing GPU or something on the lines of that. It is possible that you're laptop is using integrated graphics while running (which is unlikely since you are hitting 200fps, but who knows). Good luck!

Hi,

Yes, my laptop is plugged in and I am using high performance mode in Nvidia control panel. I went into device manager and clicked on display adapters and saw that I had both my graphics card and integrated graphics running in there. Am I safe to just disable integrated graphics? This may not have any significance, but my laptop is connected to a monitor and I have it closed while playing. Also, I searched up and found that my CPU has an advertised clock speed of 2.6-4.5 and I saw that at idle, my clock speed is at 4.00 according to task manager. (I believe this is because I set minimum and maximum CPU usage to 100%) I haven't tested it in game yet and I am about to do so.

Thanks.

Hi Rexaura, disabling the integrated graphics may lead to issues, but you can try by going into device managers and going to display adapters though this might give you glitches. Do you have Nvidia optimus? if you do this may be the causing factor of your fps drops (Optimus decides whenever to use integrated or dedicated depending on the app being ran)

Hi,

Firstly, no I do not have Nvidia optimus installed.

Secondly, I performed a short latency test while inside CSGO and got some weird results. Here they are:

CONCLUSION
_
Your system seems to be having difficulty handling real-time audio and other tasks. You may experience drop outs, clicks or pops due to buffer underruns. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. At least one detected problem appears to be network related. In case you are using a WLAN adapter, try disabling it to get better results. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES
_
The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. This includes the scheduling and execution of a DPC routine, the signaling of an event and the waking up of a usermode thread from an idle wait state in response to that event.

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (µs): 1254.90
Average measured interrupt to process latency (µs): 4.344387

Highest measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs): 1223.60
Average measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs): 1.856863

REPORTED HARD PAGEFAULTS
_
Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Process with highest pagefault count: nvcontainer.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults 173
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process: 61
Number of processes hit: 15

I do not have any audio problems like popping. It is just stuttering and low fps. What could these results mean?

Thanks.
