Took out my raid 1 hdds and read them separately...

...and nothing was recognized. i am using an external esata thermaltake blackX duet and sticking individually my drives into the duet (just one drive in there). The only time when it reads is if both drives are plugged into the duet. now my question is what if one drive fails and i need to pull data off the other? apparently just reading off one drive doesnt work no matter which of the two drives. have these two drives become two inseparable twins?
 
That doesn't sound right. All raid 1's that I've worked with could be read individually. I take it that it can still be read if just one drive is attached to the raid controller though, right? If the raid controller can't read a single drive, then neither can non-raided ports.
