Good day all, I'm a US gamer and have been mulling buying a new monitor for a while and keep ending up not moving forward because of fear of buyer's remorse. I have a few questions and guidelines for my purchase, and was hoping you all could give me some guidance or anecdotal experiences with the techs in question.
First, I'll explain my current setup. I have a pretty strong computer, i5-3570k, 8gb ram, GTX 970, and use a 1TB SSD for my system drive with a storage HDD. I currently use two 1080p 27' monitors, both TN panels (one Samsung with H-S-T mobility and one Acer barebones). I have the PSU and am able to immediately add another GTX 970 (which is currently in my HTPC, which has an iGPU can use Steam streaming instead) for higher video demands on upgrade.
My budget isn't an issue, but I will likely try to stay under $800 on a monitor. I bought an expensive 24' PVA panel around 2009 and it was horrendous for gaming and even caused noticeable video-sound desync b/c of massive delay and inaccurate mousing in RTSes. Also, the color difference between the neighboring TN panel was awkard. It ended up being a giant waste of $800 once I figured out why I was getting so frustrated.
So, lets get down to business:
Here are the questions that have been holding up my purchase decision related to the above bullet points:
Size & multi-monitor concerns:
-Would a 1440p display look and feel jarring next to a 1080p display?
-Would the refresh rate difference between a neighboring monitor at 60hz be frustrating or even cause headaches?
-Is a 1440p display comfortable enough to eliminate a 2nd monitor entirely at 30 inches?
Tech concerns:
-Is g-sync a noticeable bonus and worth the cost? I abhor nVidia for the proprietary solution and would prefer freesync but I have $700 in graphics cards from the green machine.
-Is the input lag of IPS at 1440p noticeable?
-If you have a high refresh rate monitor, have you found the increased refresh rate to be worth it? Is it able to be set to 60 should game detail suffer too much?
Shopping concerns:
-I love newegg, but they don't have the critical mass of reviews on monitors to make good purchase decisions. Is there a better place to review monitor options with good prices and return policies?
-Finally, do you have a specific monitor you recommend? If so, why?
There's a lot there, but would greatly appreciate your responses. Thanks!

So, lets get down to business:
-My target size is 27' to 30', saves my eyes a lot of frustration
-My main purpose is gaming, and I do tend to notice input lag. As mentioned above, I had a horrible experience with a PVA panel and it has scared me away from IPS panels.
-I would like a resolution increase and possibly a refresh rate increase, and based on my research, 4k is still a bit out of reach for high details? As a result, my focus has been on 1440p at 120-144hz.
