Hey there, Poppit56.

Is this a new drive? If "not" do you have data which you need to recover? Have you checked if it 's recognized by Is the drive recognized by Disk Management? Have you experienced any issues with it prior to this happening?

I'd recommend that you check if it's recognized by Disk Management, here's how to open it: How to access Disk Management in Windows to manage hard drives. If you can see the drive there, would you please be so kind as to post a screenshot of what you see: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2176231/guide-posting-screenshot-forum.html.

Other than that, you could try the drive with a different USB cable and with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens. If you don't need to...

If you don't need to recover data, I'd recommend that you download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and run the tests, to see what's the situation with the drive. If you do need to recover data, just check the drive's SMART data without running any tests.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Hi Boogieman_WD,
Thanks for your reply. No, this is not a new HD but one a friend gave me and there is no files on it , yet. In diskmgmt, it does show up and shows 1,892MB healthy partition. But I just can't open it.

Hello Boogieman, one interesting but confusing issue is this being a Toshiba HD, when I go to their website for technical help, their site claims that particular site is for only drives made in certain countries and for drives made in other countries, go to their site in that country. My drive was mfg. in the Philippines and when I go to that site, nowhere does it even list my model of HD. So, I was unable to get any help from their site. Does this sound strange ???

Hey again. Well, I really don't know how their customer support is structured, but I guess you could get in touch with an agent directly via a phone number or an e-mail listed on the website for you country and ask for instructions on how to create a support case/ticket, or how to proceed in general.
I'm still willing to try and help, but I'll need to take a look at that screenshot I mentioned in my previous post and please let me know if there have been any new developments since your previous post.
