Hi

Usually competent at fixing my own problem; this has stumped me. Cannot find a way to reliably trigger a freeze or restart - simply random. I discovered that having a video (offline or online) playing would prevent this from occurring, however in the last couple of weeks having a video playing now only delays it. How this works must be one the great mysteries of the universe.

1. Laptop - Toshiba Satellite A300. As title says, Windows 10 Pro 64bit. Still had problem when I was on W8/8.1.

2. Event viewer gives ID 41 "Kernel-power" after each incidence. Is unrelated to the PSU/jack.

3. Have run Malwarebytes, mbar, mbam which turned up nothing of importance. System is basically not infected.

4. Have followed the display driver sticky instructions. Everything good on that front.

5. Battery unit is dead i.e. not charging, laptop turns off if unplugged. Charger cable is a generic replacement model "ST-C-075", if it matters. Have tried and currently using a brand Toshiba cable. Same problem.

6. When frozen, everything is unresponsive except the touch-sensitive icons above the keyboard e.g. mute, pause/play. Their lights still react to touch.

7. Cannot run CHKDSK and cannot use any of the inbuilt Reset/Restore utilities because the laptop will freeze early in to the processes.

I suspect that the hard drive is failing, however I don't know how to test for that. I'd be happy to find out that it isn't a hardware problem though. Any help is very, very appreciated.

Intel Core 2 Duo T5750. Based on Merom, not Haswell, apparently.

That is my fear. Do you have any suggestions as to how I may be able to diagnose which part is responsible?

edit: interesting development - just had the Olympics streaming for a couple of hours now and the laptop hasn't crashed since starting. This is so bizarre. I have no idea what to make of it.
