I was using my external HDD Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 1TB for over 5 months with my Core 2 Duo processor & desktop board with WIndows 7 ultimate ... where i had only USB 2.0 and it was working good... i stored nearly 600 GB of files to it... I upgraded my system to new generation intel processor i5 and desktop board DH77KC .. it has USB 3.0 .. when i completed the installation of the system ,.. i couldnt see the harddisk in the windows explorer,,, when i checked it in disk management .. it is showing as a basic disk with unallocated space of 931 GB .. i dont know where my files files ... I trust someone here can help me to retrieve my HDD to its normal condition .... Please Assist !!!
My system config..

I5 3570K
DH77KC intel desktop board
500 GB internal SATA HDD
Nvidia Gforce GTX 650TI Boost
4GB DDR3 RAM
Cooler Master Thunder 450W SMPS..

I am not sure of what are you talking about ! Are you trying to boot off the external drive ? If you want to boot from the internal one then you just need a bootable media(DVD/USB) and repair-install the OS. All will be fine.

And if the external one showing 931GB in Disk Management as unallocated then try to give it a Drive letter and it would work normal.

Hi..

No I was telling about the external HDD I was using for back up ... now its not working.. I have checked but could not see a assign a letter option anywhere.. when right clicked it just showing that

New Simple Volume
New Spanned volume
New stripped volume
New mirrored volume

Convert to dynamic disk
convert to MBR disk
Offline
Properties

these al the options available !!!

usually these external HDDs would be in what disk format ... how can I know if all my data is in there as if it is showing an unalloted space of 931 GB (but I already moved about 600GB of data to it) in 1TB HDD

Shall I give a try by clicking New simple volume & assign a letter & create .. will that create new disk drive or it stil shows the existing data ??

Thanks again for your support ...
