Toshiba external hard drive 1tb problems

Hello,
I have just bought a 1tb external hard drive from curreys. When plugged into lap top it comes up with ' the device under 'my computer' but when I double click it it says it cannot find the device.

PLug it into another USB port, or plug it in another computer. It should narrow down your diagnosing. Thats all i can tell
