Solution
Thanks, Yogi. -Not under warranty - about 3 years old. It's a Toshiba L650 (in Australia). Can I replace only the hard drive, or is the rest of it likely to be worn out as well? I was hoping to avoid Windows 8 a while longer, but I don't know enough to keep a watch on the rest of it. It's not our main computer and there are backups.

You're welcome!

You can replace the HDD only. The HDD is the "weak link" in any computer and the one item most likely to fail at ANY time. Most other components will last a long time, as long as they are not abused, as by extreme overclocking for example.

I see 2 problems:
"05 Reallocated Sectors Count 100 (100) Data 00000001BA" = 442 in decimal
And
"C4 Reallocation Event Count 100 (100) Data 00000000AC" = 172 in decimal

Your HDD is sick. Back up all important data and keep a close eye on it. Personally, I'd replace it. Is it under warranty?
