Question Toshiba Hard Drive show files but cannot open

Hi, I have a Toshiba hard drive. When connected to my lenovo laptop, I can see all the files but when try to open files, word documents are showing "Word found unreadable content. Do you want to recover?" and when selected yes, "Word experienced an error trying to open the file". When try to open pdf files, it just says "something went wrong".

Where did this drive come from, did it have issues in the system it was in? Can you create new files or folders on it? How is it hooked up to the system?
