When the Toshiba HDD Protection utility on my ca. 2012 Portege laptop began working only intermittently I uninstalled it before attempting to install a clean version from Toshiba's website. Unfortunately, I somehow stupidly messed up the uninstall, which seems to have left bits and pieces of the original install on the drive. Attempting to install a clean version now brings the following error message: "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\56FF328A3F01FAF438CA9568C8A1D936\96C09A491C17AD74885FAA74CE9C8604. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel." Does anyone have any idea what that error message means and how I might address the problem it expresses? I am at sea.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried Safe Mode and did indeed find the key, but when I tried to delete it I got the following message: "Cannot delete. Error while deleting key." So...stuck again. Any further thoughts would be appreciated.
