Toshiba Int HDD Making Clicking Sound

Hi all, i recently build up my gaming rig for which i purchased Toshiba 2 TB internal HDD. Everything was fine for 1 week but after that my HDD started making clicking sound. Once it starts making clicking sound if i try to open any partition the whole system got hanged and i have to restart the whole system, which caught in repairing the Windows 7. Once repaired i saw windows old folder in my main partition which was consuming like 10 GB of space, so i decided to wait for 1 week and delete this folder. For that week HDD was working fine without any noise after that when i try to delete the Windows Old folder the HDD again started making clicking noise and the whole system got hanged up again. This time i did not repair the window and some how i was able to boot my system again. Now this clicking sound started to happen on regular basis and every time system got hanged up. But still the HDD is working and whenever i restart i got all partition and all of my data. But whenever i try to do something with the HDD like firmware update or anything which deals with the HDD driver it started making clicking sound and whole system got hanged.

Please help me what should i do to resolve it.

Hey rahulsingh87. First of all I'd recommend that you backup all of your important data. Then I'd suggest that you download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool or a 3rd party HDD diagnostic tool and test the drive with it. It sounds like the drive may be experiencing some issues and hopefully the tests will show you what's wrong with it.

Hey there, not to worry you but sometimes they call it the 'click of death' that's indicating the hard drive might die soon, don't worry just yet because hard drives always make light sounds, only if it's quite audible then it might be a issue.

I suggest running a few tests to see if you come up with any errors, first of tho go over to; http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php

You'll see the Toshiba section where it has clicking, play the file and let me know if it's anything similar to that.

Now I'm guessing your using Windows? So go over to Chkdsk. Just enter it in the run section and let it do it's work and let me know if anything comes up.

Hi Rayven2, thanks for reply. I checked the sound under the URL Link provided by you. My HDD makes sound similar like the 5th one under Toshiba section. I checked with the Chkdsk also but it did not show up any thing. I will try it again or i will download some third party diagnostic tool as suggested by Boogieman_wd to check. I will update the thread once i will finish the testing.

No worries, also as Boogieman_WD mentioned. Be sure to do a backup of your important files in case the HDD does die. If you need help with backing up let one of us know.

Thanks for the answer, fortunately my HDD was still under warranty so i just went to Toshibal Dealer and asked for the replacement which they have replaced easily and no problem with the new HDD.
