Toshiba Laptop missing D drive

This is about a Toshiba Satellite Laptop, the D drive that came with it (it's internal) and what happened today, with hopes that you can help me fix it without having to do a system recovery. I had the D drive disappear before and managed to fix it, but, I've been ill for a long time, since then, and, I don't remember what I did.

Okay. This morning, the internet wasn't working. It said a cable was missing. One wasn't missing. It also said 3838-PC was another device on my network, but, that 3838-PC doesn't exist. But, at that point, except for not being able to connect to the internet, things were going okay. And, I went and played around with the modem, cables, etc. and got that fixed.

Then, I went to go onto Google Chrome and it opened to a shutterstock page I had been looking at before, and, it flashed some message about how my subscription appears to have been compromised or does not exist, and, then the browser shut down. I do not know what subscription it could possibly mean. I had been using Corel Photo-Paint to make some digital artwork, but, the subscription message was related to the browser opening and I have NEVER been subscribed to shutterstock, nor have I ever gotten such a message just because of looking at one of their images.

Whatever the case, it was at this point that I found Corel Photo-Paint suddenly couldn't save to D Drive. D Drive was still showing, the files on the disk were still showing, but, everything locked up. I had to restart the computer. Then, I got a message that files were corrupted and needed to be repaired. I ended up going here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833 and doing what they said, which I have done before and never had trouble with.

After that, it said that it had found and fixed corrupted files. And, most of the time, D Drive no longer shows as even existing. Sometimes, if I put a disk in, it will show as existing for a few seconds. But, it says there is no disk - not that the disk needs to be formatted, which might happen if the files were ALL corrupted, or, that the disk is damaged. It just doesn't acknowledge that there is any disk at all. And, most of the time, D Drive isn't even acknowledged as existing.

I know I read something, a long time ago, about the command line to add (and how to do it) for both cameras and D Drives when they disappear in Windows 7 and 8, but, I can't find it anywhere.

And, by the way, this is as technical as I get. I have severe Fibromyalgia and I can muddle through some repairs and such, but, it does no good to ask any question that isn't laid out like an old McDonald's SOC sheet. Step by step, in other words, just as if you are assuming the person you are talking to probably knows how to use the keyboard and turn the machine on, maybe even the name of a thing or two, but, is not going to know what "open FDSK" means if you don't tell them how to do it. Thank you for your time.

Sounds like you have major issues, possibly a virus. Buy and install a top tier AV suite ( Kapersky, Bitdefender, Norton Internet Security, Trend Micro) and run a full scan.

If that doesn't turn up infections, right click on the windows icon and go to disk manager. If your second disk doesn't show up there, it might just be dead.

Thank you.

I can't afford to buy any such thing. But, I did go and look where and how you said to and it definitely shows. It also shows when I go under Control Panel Hardware and Devices, etc. In both cases it says it is working properly.

I have now tried AV Suite, Trend Micro, that free Fix it Microsoft Scan, A-Squared, Spy Bot, and a few other things. None of them are returning with any results. But, per where you told me to look, and, in every other way/place I have checked it, my computer is quite sure the D Drive is there and does work. It just keeps telling me to insert a disk.

XP used to do this all the time and there was a little line of code somewhere that would need to be changed or added, and I'd do that and it'd be fine. Or, if it wasn't fine, I'd just end up using Combo Fix or Darki's Boot n Nuke, use my restoration disk if needed, and ,it would be fine.

I have never had this problem occur in such a way that it couldn't be fixed with those methods until now. Now, I have WIndows 8.1 and that means no more use of Combo Fix. I don't know if the code is the same, if it is in the same place, nor do I remember how to go about fixing it anymore as it has been so long since I had to fix this issue. I'd been using Google Chromebooks for a few years and I have never had this problem with them, even when getting full on attacked by hackers who wanted to shut down such things.

I could do a complete restore and maybe that would take care of it - but, it never did in the past,, for one thing. For another, I have Corel Photo-Paint on here and I love it, but, someone stole my disk, so if do a restore, I will lose it permanently and I will never be able to afford to replace it.

Is there anything else like Combo Fix? That will work with Windows 8.1, that is?
