Toshiba Portable USB HDD Undiscoverable + Corrupted + Unformattable

I have been having problems with this one for about 8 months.

Tried to recover data, kept getting 'stuck' ie. no progress 5+ hours waiting, leaving computer on at night
I have formatted (or tried to) 5 times, all failing/lasting 5+ hours to format then saying format failed
About 4 months ago it is now undiscoverable/doesn't come up in my computer. I have used 3rd party utility programs to view it/format it/recover it but nothing has worked.

Any advice? Thanks

Try extracting the actual drive unit from the Toshiba enclosure and buy a third-party enclosure for it.
If that does not work either, the drive has most likely failed and is therefore unusable. The only fix then is a new drive.

wow looks like situation is worse than i thought. If it makes i difference it has been appearing in my computer as 'local disk' with no mention of the drive name, model, brand etc and unopenable.

Is there any other way apart from taking the thing apart? I'd rather buy i new disk than fiddle with it.
