My Toshiba p500 has white power light when I press startup hard disk light blinks then all is dead. I must remove power cord for a minute, when I plug it in, white power light comes on, then when I press startup, hard disk light blinks then all is dead. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if the unit is under warranty send it in and have the vendor fix your unit. most time it can be the hard drive has died and it pulling to much power the mb sees it as a dead short. if not it can be a system board failure. if it the main hard drive..pull the battery and the ac brick then pull the drive from the unit see if it stays on. also check that the ram and any other card is seated fine. the last issue can be a weak ac brick lost or broken power pin on the laptop.

Sorry I gave a little incorrect information (due to ignorance). I've since checked the manual for the lights and got the one that blinks when I press the start button incorrect. the one that blinks is the Power LED...so when its plugged in the white DC in LED is on, the Battery LED is orange solid and when I press the start button, the Power LED blinks and they all go off. The unit is owned by a friend's son- I don't think its been dropped-there's no evidence of it being dropped- but don't know for sure- as far as I know it just died one day. The power pack had been lost so I bought a new one. Its now been on charge for nearly 24hrs and is still showing an orange indicating charging. I note from the manual it could take 24hrs so maybe that's ok.

when I remove the battery and connect the power the same result occurs ie the DC in LED comes on and when I press the start button the Power LED blinks and the DC in LED goes out and the only way I get it back on is to remove and replace the power lead.

What also happened was when it died the owner took it to a computer shop and they removed the hard disks and copied files onto and external drive. The never put the disks back in so I had one of the computer guys at work install the drives back in...however getting it fixed was a bit beyond his skillset. Hence why I'm here...i'll go off and have a look at the Toshiba link posted by Dashing_star-thanks.

Seems as if the other comments are:
1 hard drive died.
2.ram or other card incorrectly seated.
3. motherboard failure.
4. weak ac brick of broken power pin on laptop.

I don't think it is 1 since the hard drives had been removed and they must've been working to get whatever data was on them.
I don't think it is 4 since I just purchased a new powerpac and the problem that was occurring before still is occurring...the fact that the charging lights come on also suggests its probably not 4.
so I'm left with 2 and 3...I will pull a few things off and put them back on and see what that does...however I'm getting a feeling (not what one would call a good diagnostic tool!), that its the motherboard...
anyway...off to the toshiba website.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.
