My Toshiba Satellite A205-S7466 won't boot with AC Power, and once booted will later freeze if AC Power is subsequently plugged in. The battery will charge, both when the unit is off, and before it freezes if AC Power is plugged in.

When it freezes, it is a total freeze: no mouse or keyboard functionality at all; nothing except for powering off, and cold rebooting into Safe Mode, and then, again, into regular mode.

The unit has a new, replacement battery, but the old battery had the problem also. The problem predates all of the updates for this dual-boot Win 7x64/Win 8.1x64 with maximum 4 Gb RAM. The problem also predates the relatively new SSD and was present with the original standard HD drive and Hybrid drives, previously used.

I've tried the suggestion about changing the Power Settings, but it didn't help. Other suggestions have implicated hardware issues (chip on the motherboard), but which one?

Is this a hardware problem? Or, is it something else? Who can do this repair?

Solution
Here are some chances

  • Try keep the power options settings same for battery as well as ac.
It could be a bad power adapter.
It could be the ac power jack on the board.
Or might be weak components on the board which handles the ac switching from battery.

It could be anything. Check with the power adapter. Try with a working power adapter to see if it works. If it doesnt help you should visit a computer repair shop to get fixed.
