Toshiba Satellite L450D really slow now?

So to be honest this was expected but oh well, I just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this.

So recently I fixed my old laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L450d, deleting Windows 7 and getting Ubuntu instead. However since this complete wipe it is still slow. Like I said I never expected it to regain it's previous speed, but this is where this thread comes in.

Here is the link for full specs of my pc. The device is four years old, I hadn't used it for two years prior but it is fixed and rebooted, I just need a new compatible battery as my current one can't hold a charge.

However, it retains it's extremely slow speed from beforehand. Does anyone know any reasons for this? Bad hard drive, need for more ram etc? Or maybe it's more simple than that, or even beyond that point. Nonetheless, any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd be inclined to believe the PC is throttling itself due to heat. To that end, I would recommend disassembling the laptop and cleaning the heatsink(s) really well. Videos like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo5easyIX0Y can be quite helpful for that. If you feel it's too intimidating, you could take it to a local shop to have that done. Also, the use of a cooling pad can help if heat is the issue. I don't know of a temperature monitoring program that works in Linux but you might see if one is available so you can keep an eye on temps
