I have an old Toshiba Satellite P840 which, up until recently, had Windows 10 installed on it.

Anyway, I got fed up with Windows 10, especially after the latest rounds of updates which made the laptop run super-slow, and decided to do a complete reformat and install Ubuntu 16.04.1 instead. So I made sure I've backed up everything I need, and put in the CD with a copy of Ubuntu, and started the installation process, prompting Ubuntu to completely wipe the hard drive in the process of all traces of Windows 10.

Problem is, midway through, the laptop simply, for lack of a better word, switched off, so I booted it up again, except now Windows 10 appears to be gone, when I try to boot normally, I get a "Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key" message, and if I try to boot from the optical disk drive, I either get the same message or I get the laptop going to a black screen, then to a "Toshiba: Leading Innovation" opening screen, then back to black, then back to the Leading Innovation screen, and so forth ad infinitum.

I have no idea what's going on. I considered that the optical drive and the hard drive may be broken, but then I should have been having problems way earlier, or maybe I just managed to remove Windows 10 and didn't install anything in its place, or maybe something else that I just don't know about yet.

For the record, I tried booting with both the Ubuntu CD, and another one with Kali Linux on it. Neither works.

Solution
Have [you] disabled secure boot and change UEFI boot to CSM in BIOS. The Secure Boot is the last option in the Security tab and the UEFI should be under the system configurations. To access the BIOS press and hold the F2 key and turn on the laptop.
