I have a Toshiba Satellite P30-PSP30C-RG400E laptop which has a 3.46 GHz Pentium 4 552 processor with hyperthreading support. I am looking to change out the processor in it, to something that doesn't have as high of a clock as it currently does, and hopefully runs more quickly or efficiently. My primary reason for wanting to do this is because this laptop runs very hot, and sometimes overheats and shuts off.

I've been trying to figure out what processors this laptop's motherboard supports. I've done a lot of research on the Internet, but I haven't been able to figure out what processors it can support. I know that it's possible for a processor fitting its socket to not work with the board.

Here's some relevant information:
Currently installed is a 3.46 GHz Pentium 4 552 w/ hyperthreading (clocks down to 1.86 GHz when the speed is not necessary); 16KB L1 cache, 1MB L2 cache
Processor socket, according to CPU-Z is a 478 mPGA
Motherboard model is a Toshiba EEQ00/EFQ00
Chipset is an ATI RS300/RS300M with ATI SB200 Southbridge
BIOS is revision 1.4 from Sept. 3, 2005

I would like to know what processors are compatible with this system configuration. If you know, or know how to find out, please let me know.

Solution
This is the socket CPUs http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket%20478%20(mPGA478B).html, I think you already have the fastest one. For a P4 system you can replace it with a used $100-120 older Core Duo or Core 2 Duo system and it will be a lot faster.

If you want something cooler and just replace the CPU, the Celeron models use less power and will be cooler.
