I have an 8 year old Toshiba Satellite C660 – 2EV with an Intel® Core™ i5-2430M Processor, running 64 bit. Intel® HD Graphics 3000
It has factory installed 6GB RAM as (4,096 + 2,048) MB, DDR3 RAM (1,333 MHz)
Q1: Can I swop out the 2GB RAM for a second 4GB RAM ?
Q2: Would it make much difference to performance in
• Processing Windows 10 updates (these can tie it up for 10-12 hours),
• Photo/graphics editing
• Editing large documents in Word

I suppose that replacing the processor isn't an option....

Q1) Yes, make sure same type (DDR3 RAM (1,333 MHz)- costs c€45.
Q2) Performance should improve for the large Word docs and Win 10 updates (unless bottleneck here is your connection bandwidth). Your photo/graphics editing should improve with more RAM for bigger files/processing, but displaying results is dependent on your HD Graphics, which ain't ever gonna be as good as a discrete graphics card.

You can get some more performance if you put Turbo mode on for your CPU.

How good a performance improvement is hard to quantify (depends on software, usage etc...) and would depend also on how much you'd expect for €45. If you go this route, you might try a Win 10 reinstall too. I'd do it, but then I've got €45 to spare and don't need the latest bestest laptop.
