Toshiba tablet won't recharge. Can it be resurrected?

I bought a Toshiba Satellite 8-inch tablet 2 years ago. I only used it a few times. Once it went unused and uncharged for over a week; after that it would not take a charge at all, and it still doesn't. Can it be saved? I have heard that each tablet has a little mini-battery device which must be charged up on order for it to direct the recharging of the main battery. If the tab let goes uncharged for more than a day or so, maybe less, this little battery dies and so there is no way to charge the battery,m ever again. It was nearly 200 dollars and is still nearly new!
