[Edit: When I started using the laptop this morning I found that the problem had resolved itself overnight for some reason I don't understand. So my question has changed to whether it was just a freak occurrence, or whether my touchpad has some weakness which will make it likely that the problem will occur again.]

I powered on my laptop the evening (a Lenovo Yoga 710-14IKB) and the touchpad wasn't behaving properly. The left and right buttons were functioning, but I couldn't move the pointer, use finger taps, or do multi-finger gestures. Rebooting didn't fix it.

I plugged in a USB mouse and found that turning the scroll wheel changed the size of the web page I was on, as if I were doing the two-finger shrink/enlarge gesture in the touchpad.

I tried rolling back to the previous driver, which turned out to be a standard PS/2 mouse driver. This enabled me to move the pointer, but it didn't get anything else that had been malfunctioning working again.

I updated back to the current driver and found that the misbehaviour was not consistent. At one point I found that moving one finger on the touchpad changed the size of the page I was on, as if I were doing the two-finger shrink/enlarge gesture. But right now the pointer is back to not working. However the scroll wheel on the mouse is now scrolling, rather than changing the size of the web page I am on.

When I disable the driver I am able to move the mouse pointer, press the left and right buttons, and do a deep press on the touchpad to bring up a contextual menu, but not finger taps or multi-finger gestures.

I am guessing that this is a hardware problem. Am I right? And if so, is there a way to fix it without having to replace the touchpad?

Update:
The problem resolved itself overnight. The next day I discovered that the touchpad was once again working normally. I don't know if the malfunctioning was just a freak occurrence, or whether there is an underlying problem with the hardware that will make the same thing happen again at some point. But for now, everything seems OK.
