[SOLVED] TP Link AC 1750 and Verizon Fios

Hello,

Have a Verizon Fios 50/50 plan. Lately, the internet connection has been dropping for a minute or so several times during the day. When I called tech support, they said I have an old model of the router and I need to upgrade for the new model ($15 per month or $300 single payment). The box has been installed in my closet and I connect the coaxial cable from the wall to the router and the ethernet cable from the router to the PC.

I purchased the TP Link AC 1750 router ($66). I connected the ethernet cable from the TP Link router to the PC's ethernet port and the router's power cable to the supply on the wall. There is no slot for the coaxial cable on the TP Link router and therefore I was unsure how the AC 1750 would connect to the Fios box in the closet. On a whim, I went through the set up on the router and I kept getting "WAN port is unplugged" error message and had to abandon the set up.

I want to know if there is a way to connect the AC1750 with no slots for the coaxial cable to the Fios box in my apartment? There is an ethernet slot on the Fios Box. Can I connect the AC1750 to the Fios box using the ethernet cable and run another ethernet cable from AC1750 to the PC?

Any answers that describe where I am going wrong and possible resolution would be much appreciated.

Thank you

There is no technical solution to the problems a wire running over the floor causes. I mean that is kinda why wifi exists but you want ethernet for many things like games if it a option.

The best is to run ethernet cable back to the closet and run them inside the walls going to a attic or cellar area and then down into all the remote locations.

Other solutions depends on the "wife" factor. If nobody cares taping the wire to the ceiling tends to be the quick and dirty method that is easiest. They make all kinds of fancy wall mounted tracks that let you hide wires and they make wire channels that will make it so you can run wires across the floor without tripping on them.
I don't think you can buy a "router" that has a connection that will work with fios. It is not like cable tv companies where it is very common to be able to buy modems and router/modem combo units.

FIOS uses moca I think not real sure even if it does it is likely they have it rigged that you can not use common moca adapters.

What you can do in most cases with verizon is request that they activate the ethernet port on the ONT....This is what I think you are calling the fios box in your closet.

At that point you no longer need their router and you should be able to connect your router wan port to the ethernet port and it will work. The exception to this is if you buy other services like cable tv from them. They need their router to be able to provide some of the directory services. You need to talk to them, I have seen people say that you can run both routers using their only for the cable tv function.

Thank you for your reply. That was very helpful. I am using Fios only for internet. My PC is about 15 feet from the closet where the ONT is set up. I can place AC1750 router in the closet, but I will have to run a long ethernet cable from the router to the PC which will get in my way as I walk etc. Any way to fix this issue?

Fios uses MOCA built into their G1100 box and the Fiber ONT. I'm assuming you have the G1100 Quantum Gateway.

Fiber goes into your house to the ONT, which converts it to coax(moca) and/or Ethernet. But depending on your plan and/or hardware, the coax may be just for TV or also internet. Do you have the 100/100 plan? What the model number of the ONT? If they put you on a plan higher than 100, then I think the MOCA internet shuts off and internet is only available on the ethernet cord. Which you would plug into the WAN port of your new router.

If it's the 100mbps plan or less, then the coax(MOCA) may carry the internet and you would need a moca adapter for the other end to connect to the WAN port of your router.

This one appears to work with FIOS: https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-Adapter-Ethernet-Bonded-MM1000/dp/B077Y3SQXR

Thank you for your reply! I am on the 50/50 Fios internet only plan. I could not find the model number of the ONT. I have a question about the MOCA adapter you linked:

I have the coax cable from the wall that would connect to the MOCA adapter. The ethernet cable from the MOCA adapter to the WAN port of the router. As per the diagram, it seems like I will need another coax from the MOCA adapter to the router? Will I need to buy this?
