I have got a TP Link modem router W-9980 and I can't get it to sync for longer than 2 seconds. When it does, I have a large amount of packet loss.
I have downloaded the latest firmware and still no luck.

What I notice is that it does not seem to be able to get an IP address or DNS address.
In the system log it shows "ppp0".

To set it up I have used the details given to me by my ISP.

Any help would be appreciated.

Solution
You did give the ISP the Mac address of the new Modem router to authorize it for connection to the service didn't you.

You have to phone up the ISP provider and inform them you have changed the modem/ router combination.
If you do not provide the Mac address of the new modem or router printed on the sticker of the device it will be refused connection to the service.

A Mac address is unique to each cable modem/ router on the subscribed ISP.
Look at the underside of your new router modem.
Phone your ISP and tell them you bought a new modem/router and need it to be authorized at the headend or authentication servers.
Giving them that Unique Mac address number on the device.

It will look something like Mac:- 00: A1: 2B: CC: EF: 64: 4B...
Well if it does sync then your setup is probably correct. But the corresponding packet loss means some disconnection somewhere.

Check the wiring connections. Make sure all the plugs are securely seated and snug.

Should be something like telephone wall jack --------> splitter (filter) --------> W-9980 and another wire to the telephone. Try a different splitter if you have or can get one. Try new cables that are known to work.

Could also be a problem in the wiring leading to the telephone wall jack or a bad connection inside the wall jack. If you are comfortable doing so you can open up the wall jack and check the wiring connections inside. Even a connection that looks okay can be faulty. Check your outside wiring as best and as safely as you can. Look for any exposed copper wire, rodent chewing, corrosion, kinks in the wiring, brown or blackened insulation, etc.. Any physical problems.

Also call your ISP and have them run some tests from their end.

I had called the ISP and there are no faults in the line.
My old modem router still works. This is the one from my ISP but it's not the fastest hence why I got the TP link.

Why do I keep getting intermittent ppp0?

Give them the exact Mac number of the router/ modem you just bought.

On the sticker of the device.
That is why you cannot connect to the service because the hardware device/ Mac is not registered on the ISP network as it stands.
