TP Link Powerline Adapters not working with Sky Q Router

Hi guys,

This is my last ditch effort to solve this as I'm sick of speaking to Sky and people on the Sky forum which have been no help whatsoever. I'm sorry this is long but I want you to have all the information.

Basically, my router is in my bedroom. My 2 PCs are in the spare room across the hallway. My Sky Q TV box is downstairs.

The powerline adapters are the TP Link AV2000 2-port Gigabit Powerline Starter Kit TL-PA9020

My PC does have integrated wireless but for whatever reason (my PC is custom built and 6 months old) it does not pick up any wireless networks and the other PC doesn't have wireless on it anyway. So for both PCs, I use TP Link Powerline adapters to connect to the internet.

Before upgrading to a full Sky TV package we had the normal Sky hub, with the smiley face on the front of it. I would plug the powerline adapters in, pair them up, and I would get internet access with no issues.

I use two sets of powerline adaptors, one set for one PC and one set for another PC. The reason I use two sets rather than having both PCs connect to one powerline adapter is that sometimes the light would go red on them and I would lose internet access on one of the PCs but I would simply unplug and plug them back in and they would work fine again. But this was annoying so I went back to using two separate ones.

Now that we have upgraded the Sky TV package to the full package, we have been sent all of the SKY Q equipment which includes the Sky Q router. I plugged in the router, let it update and then plugged in my adapters as I would normally. All of the LEDS on the adapters are green so I go over to my PC and it shows it has connected to the internet but with limited access. When I troubleshoot the network, it says "Ethernet does not have a valid IP configuration."

I googled this error and carried out numerous "fixes" that people recommended online, still didn't work. I called Sky customer support, the guy on the phone told me (this was in 2016) that the Q router does not support powerline adapters and just to use my old hub. So this is what I did.

No issues at all - until now.

My old Sky hub is now having a lot of errors. The SkyHD+ light at the very bottom of the hub would normally always be on but now it is not illuminating. It will come on randomly for a few hours but will often go off again. Both PCs are having issues connecting to the internet (the wireless symbol also keeps going off too). So I rang Sky up again, explained the issue (this was this week) and the lady on the phone told me I HAVE to use the Sky Q router and that my Sky Hub I have been using seems to be broken. I told her why I didn't use the Sky Q router and she said the information I was given was incorrect, powerlines do work with the router. I said to her well they don't but it might have been updated since so I will try again.

After being on the phone and on hold for over an hour, I plugged in the Sky Q router and did what I would normally do, went to my PCs and low and behold - no internet access with the same exact error I was getting before.

I am stuck guys and honestly I'm fed up. No one seems to know the cause of this issue and I'm sick of calling Sky and being on hold for over 30-40 minutes before I even get through to someone.

Has ANYONE got any idea at all what is going on?

Why is the Sky Q router not working with my powerline adapters? I've tried resetting the router and everything with no luck.

Is there a setting I need to enable on the Q router so my powerlines will work? What does "Ethernet does not have a valid IP configuration" even mean?

You guys are my last hope! If you can't fix it, I know nobody can. So I will be cancelling Sky and moving to BT where I'm assuming I won't have this issue. I'm even considering paying an electrican quite a lot of money to come and install a phone socket in my spare bedroom where my PCs are just to hardwire them to help solve it. (I assume this would fix the problem?)

hay tom have you tried going into the admin terminal of the Q hub and enabling its built in power line but this will only work if the powerline adapters your uring are WPA200 complient i think is the standerd

secondly i think there is a problem with the LAN routing table on your router go to advanced and LAN IP setup and reserve ip adresses for your pc's then reboot the routyer it will sendout all the DHCP leases and this should fix the problem but if this dont work yeh in would hardwire the pcs in to the network with an ethernet cable
Just a quick one, I have powerline adaptors connected to a Sky Q Router and it works absolutely fine out of the box.

Have you attempted to just have one functioning Powerline adaptor pair to see if it functions then? Having more than 1 in the same powerline can sometimes cause conflictions.
