Hello, I don't understand much about routers and networks and am trying to work things out following online tutorials. I am running Ubuntu 14.10, and plan to install the DD-WRT firmware on my TP-Link TL-WR841ND 7.2 router. But I cannot even manage to login to the firmware.
First, I did a hard-reset (30 / 30 / 30).
I entered in the cmd line
$ arp -a
and found out my IP to be 192.168.169.254
So I connected my router via cable to my laptop and typed that address in the browser. Here the problem happened. The prompt keeps appearing asking for my username and password. I type
admin
admin
And it reappears. If I press "ESC" or click the button to cancel, it says "wrong username/password".

Any help will be welcome. Thank you all.

Do you have another computer or OS you can try to connect with?

If you can't connect from a different computer and browser also, contact TP-Link and see what may be going on.

Is that the gateway IP you are connecting to? I don't know exactly what TP-Link uses for the defult IP but that 192.168.169.254 seems off.
